Magic: the gatheringcontinues to expand into other universes and on November 21, 2025 Aang’s adventure begins in TCG format. Avatar: The Last Airbender comes to the popular trading card game with what has been a highly successful animated series that has received critical acclaim for its characters, cultural references, art direction, voice acting, soundtrack, humor and theme. The themes of the series include concepts that are rarely addressed in youth entertainment, such as war, indoctrination or freedom of thought.

Waterfall. Earth. Fire. Aria… dominate the elements with the new Magic: The Gathering cards
We had the opportunity to participate in the virtual press conference that Wizards of the Coast organized to officially present the long-awaited collaboration with Magic: The Gathering. Avatar: The Last Airbender -which in our market translates as Avatar: The Last Airbender. Under the motto “Water. Earth. Fire. Air… Magic”. Details of the new Magic: The Gathering (MTG) expansion inspired by the Avatar universe have been revealed, its release date, the playable mechanics and, above all, the artistic styles that will dress each card. This article focuses precisely on AS the art of the collection has been addressed and how faithful Maintains the spirit of the animated series.
The 4 fundamental elements will be the protagonists of the new edition, as in the series: water, earth, fire and air, which will make this edition one of the most anticipated of 2025 in the world of Magic: The Gathering. A year full of great editions that is approaching an equally exciting 2026.

The art of Magic: the gathering – Avatar: The Last Airbender It’s hypnotic and nostalgic at the same time.
During the event it was confirmed that the extension will be part of the line Universes beyond from MTG, with a release date for November 21, 2025. The original Avatar series – created by Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko – is clearly the source of inspiration: Wizards of the Coast has worked closely with the IP owners to ensure that the setting, characters, key moments and aesthetics are respectfully translated into the card game. This level of effort is reflected not only in the mechanics (air, water, fire, and earth curves) but also in the art styles selected for the cards.

During the presentation, different typologies or visual treatments that coexist in the expansion were shown.
1) Graphics directly inspired by the series – “show adjacent” style.
One of the strengths of the presentation was that some cards adopt a graphic style very close to the original design of the animated series: clean lines, flat and saturated colors, recognizable poses of the main characters (Aang, Katara, Zuko, Toph). The sensation was that of hearing it continuously “it seems like they teleported the animation into the world of MTG”.
This visual style promotes fidelity, because fans of the series immediately recognize the characters, their gestures, their clothes and the environments of the Four Nations (Water Tribe, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, Air Nomads). Thanks to this, the feeling is that the expansion honors the series in aesthetic terms.
2) Special and alternative treatments – display cases, elementary frames and collectible variants
But it doesn’t stop there: with this new edition of Magic a sort of double production has been created: on the one hand art faithful to the series to evoke nostalgia and direct representation, and on the other a more luxurious art that explores structures, variations, foil techniques, alternative borders and premium visual styles. For example:
- Letters with Elemental Mark (each element – air, water, earth, fire – has a different frame or engraving pattern)
- Cards without borders (no traditional MTG borders) showing characters in “battle poses” or key scenes from the series.
- Cards lands at full art of Appa flying across the skies of the Four Nations, which ties directly into the iconography of the series.
- Edition raised plate (embossed + foil) for the set header card: Aang in his Avatar form mastering the four elements. The art was done by Bryan Konietzko, one of the creators of the series.
3) Reinterpreted “MTG style” style, with fantasy shades
Finally, a style more in line with the artistic tradition of MTG was also presented: fantasy illustrations, with volume, deep shadows, epic composition and a more classic treatment of a spell or fantasy creature poster. However, this option doesn’t break fidelity: rather, it serves as a bridge to integrate the Avatar license into MTG’s visual system, so that it doesn’t feel like a simple skin but rather an organic part of the game.

The Scene Boxes, the themed Bundles, the use of illustrations that break the traditional mold of MTG (such as Appa’s full-art lands) ensure that the purchasing experience also reflects the series. At the conference, the managers spoke about the Four Nations world tour as a metaphor for playing on set.

The series is honored in every card, not only in the art but also in the mechanics
The stated presence of Aang, Katara, Toph, Zuko, and others strengthens the bond. It was noted in the presentation that the collection will recreate key scenes from the series through Sagas (cards that tell a story) or Scene Boxes (with several cards that together show a scene). These decisions increase fidelity: it’s not just about isolated characters, but about telling moments from the Avatar narrative. As we have already underlined, the fact of adopting a style very close to the original animated design for a good number of cards helps to give the feeling at all times that it is truly AVATAR. The premium variations offer stylistic divergences, but without abandoning the recognizable elements (clothes, symbols of each nation, bent poses). This balances thematic fidelity with the artistic freedom that MTG demands.

As for the gameplay, I cannot fail to underline that the new mechanics (airbend, waterbend, Earthbend, Firebend) are explicitly inspired by the series, which strengthens the coexistence between aesthetics and functioning of the game. A well-illustrated card with an Avatar skin but no attached mechanics would run the risk of looking like nonsense; Here that bridge is being prepared.

Personally I believe that the great success of this edition was to propose a scaled visual spectrum: from almost animated illustrations, through hybrid styles (special frames, premium variants) up to “MTG with an Avatar flavor”. This plurality allows for loyalty without cover-ups. I dare say that for many collectors it will be the “full-art Appa” cards or the “borderless battle pose” that will provoke the “I want to have these” beyond the deck.
Magic: the gathering – Avatar: The Last Airbender will arrive in November, key dates and products
As in the other editions, in addition to the Bundle there will be game packs and collector’s packs. But for this very special edition there will also be other products such as the Commander Bundle and the Scene Box. But without a doubt the inclusion of differential formats such as the starter box and Jumpstart booster packs are another incentive for this collection.
