Wan spoke about the evolution of Black Manta and why he will be even more dangerous in this sequel: “One of the things I want to point out is that, in the first film, he is clearly a human being, which he still is in this one, but having discovered the Lost Kingdom, now he has a power that he didn’t have in the first film. The character’s first episode functioned as an origin story, assembling many of the character’s historical elements from the comics. When it premiered in 2018, Abdul-Mateen II’s character, David Kane, was simply a mercenary out for revenge for the death of his father. Although he had his advanced suit, his human nature was no match for Aquaman’s Atlantean-derived abilities. By the time Kane was finished, he had built his iconic costume. Black blanket and was ready to begin the training necessary to become a worthy opponent of Arthur.

Time hasn’t stopped its march since Arthur joined the Justice League. This means that the events of the Aquaman and Zack Snyder crossover film have been left behind in this sequel. While much of the plot of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been kept under wraps, the new trailer reveals that Arthur will have to face an ancient dark power that will be unleashed into the waters of Atlantis. All indications are that Black Manta will be the central villain, forcing the titular hero to ally himself with an ancient enemy to protect his underwater kingdom.
