Une critique de l'enfer

The murderer of the beginning of the 20th century remains one of the most famous in history. There are more serial killers in these parts than just Jack, so it doesn’t stand out either for the number of victims or the brutality with which they are exterminated. It was the encouragement of the London tabloid press that made this inscrutable dictator, if there really was one, a formidable figure that made his popularity eternal.

In the year In the 1970s, author Stephen Knight published Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution, which described the murders of five prostitutes in Victorian-era Whitechapel as the result of a family conspiracy. Artist Walter Sickert concluded that the main purpose was to cover up the secret marriage of Prince Albert Victor and humble Annie Elizabeth Crook, with the famous doctor William Gull responsible for the crimes.

Although over time this concept has been rejected and ridiculed, it is very interesting to develop interesting plots based on it. But Alan Moore wasn’t content with bringing this crazy theory to cartoons, the British screenwriter thought to go much further…

Showing the image of Victoria

Eddie Campbell’s feisty style perfectly serves to portray the society of the time in which this story takes place. Like the ghoul in the play, Moore possesses the feathery skill to coldly and analytically dissect an unenviable society. There are no heroes here, no heather graham sane johnny depp acting as the prophet of the killer as happened in the film adaptation of this work.

But not satisfied with contemporary reality from a socio-economic and even an architectural point of view, the screenwriter went into the mind of the monster to find something far from a simple psychological path, and thus the understanding of the figure to the 2000s. At the beginning of this hellish journey, the point of turning the story into something the reader might not have expected.

Finally, in a metacomic exercise, Moore takes the opportunity to answer the events of 1888, not only about Jack’s celebrity, but also about all the people who followed in his footsteps in the following decades. He left, mixing history, fact and fiction.
