A classic 32-year-old Spider-Man saga finally gets his due

Knowledge Waits is a feature where I just share part of the story of the comic strip that interests me. Today, I celebrate Marvel finally collecting one of the big big major Spider-Man races in an Omnibus JM Dematteis / Sal Buscema!

I have a recurring feature (which I have not used for several years, but, well, you know, I have a lot of features, sometimes I forget them) called almost hidden, on the big comics which have never been collected before. Fortunately, over the years, a good amount of stories that I have led in this feature have been collected. However, one of the most notable examples (so remarkable that I did not even bother to do a functionality on it, because everyone knew the stupidity of not being collected), JM Propteis and the excellent race of Sal Buscema Spectaclar Spider-Manhas not been collected.

This “outrage” (quotes because, well, we only talk about collecting a comic strip here, you know?) Was finally corrected, while Marvel published this week this week Spectaclar Spider-Man!

Now, you may wonder why it was so shame that this race was not collected earlier, and I will let you know (advanced warning, I wrote on this race before, so I’m sure I will repeat myself sometimes)!

Who was the central figure of JM Demutteis and Sal BUSCEMA SPCTACULAR SPIDER-MAN RUN?

In 1987, JM Dematteis wrote one of the most emblematic Spider-Man stories of all time, “Kraven’t Last Hunt”, which was drawn by Mike Zeck and John Beatty, with colors of Christie Scheele, and an amazing lettering of Rick Parker. The story took place during two months of the three Spider-Man titles at the time (Amazing Spider-Man, Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man). It was the first time that Demontisis had written a problem of Spectaclar Spider-Man (Numbers # 131-132), but in 1991, he returned to the title from Spectaclar Spider-Man # 178, and he would leave the book only to take up the flagship title of Spider-Man, Amazing Spider-Man, during the clone saga.

Demutteis and the first Buscema Arc Ensemble revisited the classic of Demutteis “Kraven’s Last Hunt” (and even Rick Parker, the lemer of this arc, on board), while plunging into the tenuous mental state of Harry Osborn. Nicknamed “The Child Inside”, the story presented Dr. Ashley Kafka, the head of the Ravencroft Institute for Cleanly Clean. In addition, he established that vermin (an animal-shaped creature that had been a pawn in “Kraven’s Last Hunt”), Spider-Man and Harry Osborn were all confronted with serious childhood trauma.

Harry begins to see visions of his cruel and little loving father, Norman …

And like a devil on his shoulders, his father’s Harry version in his mind is so powerful that he forces Harry to reproduce part of the abusive behavior that Harry treated as a child with Harry’s own son, normie. Harry’s psyche tries to fight against Norman’s influence on Harry by presenting, in fact, the angel on Harry’s shoulder, in the person of Spider-Man, who explains to what extent a guy from Norman was bad, and that helps to remove Harry Brigad, but it is quickly obvious that he is still retired from this fantastic idea of all the good moments with his father, whom he always tries to recruit with standard. Normie, of course, actually has a good father, so he is just a happy little child, but he does not know that his loving father is currently extremely torn inside.

While Harry deals with all this, he must also face the fact that he learned that Spider-Man was Peter Parker years ago, and had forgotten him, but it was now coming back to him (it mentioned the way Norman Osborn also learned of Peter’s identity, and forgot him, and remembered it, and forgot, etc.). Harry is obviously struggling with competing thoughts, the idea that he knows that his father was a monster, and yet, at the same time, he was always his father, and he loved him, even if he knew that his father apparently did not care about him.

He attacks Spider-Man, revealing that he knows that Peter is Spider-Man, and therefore Peter is haunted from the fact that he wants to help his friend (as he cares about Harry), but, well, go, Harry attacks it! Harry, meanwhile, has so much trouble that he can’t help with the personality of green goblins. The most famous number of this race may be their 30th anniversary Spider-Man number in 1992, Spectaclar Spider-Man # 189.

Harry kidnaps his wife, his son and his brother-in-law, the former supervillain known as the melted man. He holds them all hostage, then reveals his new crazy position, his way of reconciling everything. He will be the green goblin, but he will kiss him with his family, while his father ignored him! How much is it incredibly sad to what extent does it norma?!?

Spider-Man presents himself and has a dinner tense with them all, and he says he wants to help him. Harry doesn’t care. This then leads to Molten Man and Liz to turn Harry, but Harry suddenly attacks the man in fusion, then crushes Liz mentally, leaving norm “choose” above …

Harry used Peter’s secret as blackmail to prevent Spider-Man from attacking him, but Spidey finally starts, and tells him that he can reveal his identity if he wants, Peter cares too much about him not to stop him, so he does exactly that …

We even got a classic punch buscema! Normie sees that this happens, so now it is very anti-German. The authorities arrive, and Harry taunts if he will reveal Peter’s secret, but stands … for now!

How did the Demutteis / Buscema take place on spectacular Spider-Man fine?

First of all, Demutteis and Buscema envelop the intrigue of the vermin before returning to Harry, which returns for the 200th number of the series in 1993, which somehow operates as a final of their race.

Harry kidnaps Mary Jane, but he insists that he does not want to hurt anyone …

He decides to form a charity of the Norman Osborn Foundation, still obsessed with the acquisition of his father …

In the end, he and Peter have another battle on the old property of Osborn (which is used for the base of the foundation), and Harry wins. He plans to explode everything, killing himself, Peter and Mary Jane (who ended up there to try to speak again at Harry). However, Normie is there too, and Harry cannot let them die, so he saves Mary Jane and Normie. Mary Jane, of course, asks him how he can let it die, so he heroically saves Peter, too …

And the stress of the goblin formula on his heart is too much, and Harry dies. It’s such a beautiful story. In many ways, this is really the end of the race, but they remain technically for three other problems, while the story goes directly into the crossover “maximum carnage”, where demands and buscema deliver one of the best moments of the whole crossover (about the formation of a group of bad guys, and attacking New York in a murderous crawling)! You see, one of the big arches in history was a decisive spider-man if he was ready to kill super-villains. His morality said no, but everyone continues to call him a sap, so he is ready to kill carnage, but then changes his mind at the last minute. Spider-Man is struck on the ground, Carnage captures Venom, and escapes, and Peter feels terrible. Fortunately, however, when he needs it most …

Captain America is there to say to him: “What would you say with one hand, son? You seem to be able to use it.”

What a great use of Captain America (who Dematteis also wrote for a few years). Yes, # 200 is probably spiritually the end of their race, but I think that this moment is still worth it to want to celebrate.

After writing a single arc on Spider (The quarter-man quarter of the time, which made creative teams rotating at the time), Demutteis then took a break from Spider before returning to write Amazing Spider-Man Early 1994 (He would return to Spectaclar Spider-Man For another race, which I could discuss in the future).

Congratulations to JM Demutteis and Sal Buscema for having finally seen this race collected!
