The following contains spoilers for Amazing Spider-Man #16, on sale next week at Marvel Comics
As you may or may not know, Amazing Spider-Man is currently a split book, with every other issue featuring a different Spider-Man. There’s the REAL Spider-Man, Peter Parker, who was thrown into space, where he befriended a group of aliens, and is training to become stronger in order to return to Earth to defeat Hellgate, the mysterious being who showed up, kicked Spider-Man’s butt, and then stranded him on another planet.
While Peter is gone, his former enemy turned assistant, Norman Osborn, has taken over as Spider-Man, using Osborn technology (and his own strength derived from the Green Goblin serum) to mimic Spider-Man’s abilities. Ben Reilly, meanwhile, pretends to be Peter Parker so that he can, in effect, take the life he feels has been “stolen” from him all these years.
The rest of the “Spider-crew” (Miles Morales, Silk, Araña, Ghost-Spider and Spider-Boy) apparently convinced Osborn to abandon his identity as Spider-Man in Amazing Spider-Man #12, but in Amazing Spider-Man #14, Osborn became Spider-Man again when “Peter’s” boss was nearly killed. In this CBR exclusive sneak peek, we see the aftermath of all these different pieces of the puzzle.

In the preview pages, we see four separate conversations happening at the same time. The first of the conversations is Ben Reilly talking to his girlfriend (the anti-hero known as Hallow’s Eve, who has the ability to gain powers through the magical “masks” she wears) about how weird it feels to be taking over Peter’s life and whether he owes Peter more than that.
The second conversation is Norman being warned by the Spider crew via a spider tracker that they know he’s Spider-Man again, and they tell him he needs to stop.
The third conversation takes place between Aunt May and J. Jonah Jameson, who has recently become an ally of Spider-Man (and who knows Spider-Man’s secret identity), and wants to see if May has noticed anything wrong with Peter recently. May has a new boyfriend and she playfully tells her new boyfriend that they might have to meet her 60-year-old former stepson (May married Jonah’s father, but he passed away).
Finally, Tombstone doesn’t handle Spider-Man’s more brutal tactics well (because Norman Osborn is Spider-Man) and it recruits an all-new villain, Plague X, who makes his debut in these pages, but you’ll have to pick him up. Amazing Spider-Man #16 next week to see Plague X in action!
