After the governor

This volume opens immediately after the cataclysm that was the war against Governor and the destruction of the prison in which our protagonists were repaired during a good handful of numbers. Rick GrimesHis son and a very small group of survivors are scattered to his destiny. The blow is very difficult, because many of the characters who accompanied us from the beginning died. The feeling of orphan is brutal and we have father and son here survive alone, almost like two ghosts that cling to what they have left little.

There are times when Rick is about to collapse and Carl GrimesDespite being a child, he begins to demonstrate that hardness that he will define it later. It is a live generational change in which we see that Carl ceases to be a child to become someone who understands too early what it means to live in this terrible post -apocalyptic world. That transition, that vulnerability of Rick and that early maturity of Carl, is the first thing that marks the tone of this volume.

As the story advances, the survivors gather and the group takes shape again, although increasingly reduced. And here he enters a new key element in the plot, since we will take a look at the answer to all the mysteries in the character of Eugene Porter And his famous revelation that knows what happened to the zombies and how to solve it. But be careful, because this will also be the engine of the next large arch of the series, since to repair everything you need to get to Washington. Our protagonists have a purpose again.

Cannibals

During his trip to Washington, the group is a different threat for everything we have seen so far. It is a band of cannibals that chases the forests, waiting at the right time to attack and obtain more food for its refrigerator. It is something that Kirkman will cook on fire until everything explodes when the kidnapping of Dale Horvath. Dale is one of the most veterans survivors, so the impact for the reader (and for him) will be enormous when he wakes up to discover that they have amputated one leg and that their meat has been cooked and devoured.

What follows is the descent of Rick and his towards the most absolute violence. When they catch the cannibals, there are no judgment or half inks: they annihilate them, a fully lynching. Rick ends up verifying everything we are seeing with a phrase that says something similar “We are no longer what we were, now we are the hunters” And this perfectly summarizes that total loss of innocence in these characters. This moment is fundamental because it clarifies that, at this point, the group does not differ so much from its enemies. It has become something ferocious, something almost unrecognizable.

Alexandria

Next appears Aaronthe recruiter of the community of AlexandriaAnd the possibility of a different life for our protagonists is raised for the first time. The revelation that there is a walled city in which people live with a certain normality is received with total skepticism. And it is not less later Woodbury and cannibals. The characters are paranoid and very reluctant when they believe in this miracle, but at the same time they need a truce, a place to hear people again.

Now his ability to survive is tested, but to reconstruct in society after everything they have lived. Do you still know how to trust others? How to put the knife under the pillow aside? Alessandria is the beginning of a new stage stage and this volume ends only with that Ajar door … will they be able to integrate or are they too broken for this?

This full -integral third works as a bridge between two very different phases, between the absolute desolation after the fall of the prison and the new horizon that Alexandria supposes. Kirkman plays constantly with that duality and when you think there can be nothing more horrible, he introduces you to cannibals. But when you think there is nothing more to save, then Aaron appears with the promise of a stable community. The rhythm is fantastic, alternating chapters of pure voltage with others of introspection. AND Charlie Adlard It looks like a black and white that perfectly transmits both the visceral horror and the most emotional and introspective moments that we will live in this volume.

The best thing is how this volume reflects the moral evolution of the characters. Rick is no longer the sheriff who has tried to maintain the law and order, but now he is a man who understands that the law died with the ancient world. Carl stops being a child. Michonne It continues to grow as a key character who transports the pile by flag, someone who represents ferocity but also loyalty. And give him a bitter but truly memorable farewell. In short, this volume is one of the most powerful blocks of the entire series. It is brutal, uncomfortable and, at the same time, necessary.
