The following contains major spoilers for Surface Season 2, Episode 1, “New Money”, now streaming on Apple TV +.
THE Surface The first in season 2 does what each second season should in a way that the public will not see coming. The Apple TV + series presents season 2 as a kind of sweet reset for Sophie Ellis, who always tries to recover her memories. But in reality, the season is further in the global mystery of the series, and this truth sneaks over the spectator with grace, style and a growing feeling of dread.
Season 2, Episode 1, “New Money” finds Sophie in London, where she works immediately to break into the Huntley’s ridiculously rich family. It turns out that Sophie knew the family a decade ago, and the first episode is entirely devoted to Who’s Who and where all the pieces fall. Nothing comes easy in the episode, but whoever looks for a thriller of which he can actively feel like part of everything they might ask for.
Surface season 2, episode 1 requests again which is Sophie
GUGU MBATHA-RAW continues to drive the series
There are actually two mysteries that occur simultaneously Surface: The one Sophie investigation, and the question of “who is Sophie?” As she discovers, the public also discovers it. This idea allows the creator of the Veronica West series – which was previously a writer -producer on the successful drama of NBC Chicago Fire – To put the audience in Sophie’s shows. Season 2, episode 1 is particularly based on this idea, because there is a lot of information to process. Sophie returns to London for the first time in a decade and having to react to everything is a practical way for the West script to also explain who, where and what is most important.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw continues to be excellent in the role of Sophie, also known as Tess Caldwell, while his character moves between different tones and characters. In a scene, Sophie is dressed in the nine and the shocking tenderers during a charity gala from the Huntley Foundation. In another, she walks lost in her own apartment. The first of season 2 contains no obviously emotional moments, because a large part of what is happening with Sophie is either in her head or she must hold things up near the vest. Thus, it is remarkable that Mbatha-raw is able to transmit confusion, the determination of his character and even a little bad simply through facial expressions and the change of occasional tone. The whole series revolves around Sophie, and Mbatha-Raw makes this look easy.
The elephant in the room is that the episode requires a general understanding of what happened in season 1. The public does not need to see the whole season, but a quick look at Wikipedia or The character of Apple Deep Dive is recommended. Otherwise, viewers will not have all the important moments – notably Mark Ellis seeming to appear in Sophie’s bathtub. Sophie’s fear is much more intense if we know who Mark is and what Sophie has done to her. But in general, Surface It is not a spectacle that can be watched with casualness or in the background anyway. This requires fans to watch and pick up small details, and that’s what makes the series so engaging.

The first of season 2 surface presents new intriguing characters
Gavin Drea draws the attention of viewers early
With the passage to London, the Surface The first of season 2 is running on most new characters. Mark makes this brief appearance, and Millie Brady returns as Eliza for several uncomfortable scenes on her story with Sophie. But most of the screen time in “New Money” goes to the establishment of new faces, which are all up to the task and to find ways to break the archetypes of their characters. The most important new arrival is Callum Walsh, represented by Gavin Drea de Prime Video’s Daisy Jones and the Six adaptation. Callum is configured to be Sophie’s proverbial partner in crime – if she really leaves it. , in which Sophie finally said to him (and the spectator) what is all this.
Sophie Ellis (in Callum): Eliza and I are friends. And I am ready to use this relationship to discover the truth … I think William Huntley murdered my mother.
Drea plays Callum as a guy who has definitely seen certain things long before Sophie enters her life, but he does it with a certain charisma that prevents the character from feeling like another cynical and hard journalist. On the other side of the equation, Eliza’s brother, Quinn Huntley and her fiancée Grace, represented by Ted Lasso Star Phil Dunster and Freida Pinto, respectively. Grace appears only in two scenes, but Quinn gets enough equipment for the public to already like it. It’s just a trip to see Dunster play a character so different from Jamie Tartt on the same platform that houses Ted LassoAnd it deserves the merit of having just found the right amount of SMARM.

Surface season 2 is worth watching on Apple TV +?
The second season will be familiar to certain audiences
Surface is an incredible spectacle, having more in common with great British dramas like Service line that American TV, and not only because it takes place in London. Its deliberately slow pace and its equally deliberate conversations between the characters make it feel much more European, and the series is better for that. This allows more time to register, performance to sink and the tension to build. Apple TV + is wise to publish episodes each week, because it is a program where viewers will benefit from the additional time to process and perhaps even come back for a second watch. Some audiences may be deactivated by the way things move and the amount of information to share, and that means that it is not the most exciting vision experience.
But this is worth the investment, because there is not a single scene that looks like Filler or as West drags its plot. THE Surface The first of season 2 provides everything that viewers need to follow and worry about following. The series plays with a lot of familiar guys, like people who do not make the rich covering a scandal, and the obstinate journalist determined to exhibit them at all costs. Viewers will know these general concepts – but the performances of the actors help the characters stand out enough for familiarity to be a problem. Surface Season 2 is better described as a cross between Scandal And Service line. There is a lot of money, power and secrets to have, but decoding the characters is the real challenge, and the biggest reason to hang on again.
