The bottom was critically acclaimed after its premiere. The body horror has received several major award nominations, and it is expected to garner potential Oscar nominations. Still, the film was physically exhausting for one of its main stars.
During an interview on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Margaret Qualley, who plays the younger version of Demi Moore’s character, revealed that the prosthetics she wore during filming seriously damaged her skin. The actress received several Best Supporting Actress nominations for this role, including at the Critics’ Choice Awards and the Golden Globes. However, his involvement came with great sacrifices.

Talking about the mental challenges of such a role, the actress also revealed the physical damage around 11:50 am. “Wait, did you see Kinds of Kindness” she asked Josh Horowitz about the other film she starred in in 2024, the black comedy directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, in which she played four characters: Vivian, Martha, Rebecca and Ruth. “You know that the character has all this acne, it was just my acne from the prosthetics“.
It probably took me about a year to physically recover from all of that.
She noted that it was “pretty perfect” that she could use her “crazy prosthetic acne.” She explained: “I play all these different characters. For one of these we’ll be using all my crazy prosthetic acne.Qualley added:it probably took me about a year to physically recover from all of that.“

‘They’re so political’: Substance director says horror films deserve more Oscar recognition
For Coralie Fargeat, horror films allow directors to break taboos without reservation.
“At the end, when they pull up my skirt in the opening credits, and it’s like palm trees all around and they have all these long lenses from the bottom, it’s just because my face was so fucked up at the time. They couldn’t shoot me in the face anymore.“
Substance will return to cinema
The bottom follows an aging TV star who uses a mysterious wonder drug to create a younger, more marketable version of herself. The film also stars Demi Moore, who recently won her first Golden Globe for the role, and Dennis Quaid. Coralie Fargeat wrote and directed the critically acclaimed body horror film.
The bottom premiered at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, winning the Best Screenplay award. It was followed by a limited theatrical release in the UK and was released on Mubi for release on September 20, 2024. Following its awards season success, The bottom will return to the cinema. Starting January 17, the film will be available in more than 350 theaters across the United States.
The horror grossed $78.3 million worldwide (via Box office mojo) against a budget of 17.5 million dollars, making it a commercial success, a figure which will surely increase with the new theatrical re-release.
