The following contains major spoilers for X-Men #9, on sale now from Marvel Comics.
Marvel’s most important X-Men teams have finally found the one thing they can’t stand: war.
X-Men #9 picks up in the middle of the battle at Greymalkin Prison, formerly the Xavier Institute. There, the heroes of the X-Men came looking for one of their own, especially Beast, who was only recently stolen. Greymalkin Prison also happens to be where Rogue’s Uncanny X-Men launch an attack to retake their old home. Unfortunately, no matter how much the two teams have in common, their opinions on what to do about Charles Xavier couldn’t be more different, nor could they provide a better reason for classic infighting between X-Men.

Introduced in 1963 X-Men #1 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Professor Charles Xavier was the original founder of the eponymous team. After years of trying to figure out how best to help mutants and humanity bridge the gap between them, Xavier founded his own school and sought out young mutants in need to fill his hallowed halls. With a mission of peace and prosperity for all, Xavier did everything he could to help his students become the heroes he knew they were meant to be, not without some truly astonishing controversies along the way.
One of the most controversial moments of Xavier’s career occurred during the height of the mutant war against the anti-mutant organization known as Orchis. In an attempt to gain favor with the artificially intelligent rulers of Orchis, Xavier led a brutal attack on the space frigate known as Agnew. This prevented the destruction of the Sentinel City of Nimrod, all at the cost of the lives of dozens of otherwise innocent humans who were aboard the ship when it detonated its own nuclear warhead.

An X-Men icon still can’t leave his dark Krakoan-era legacy behind
One of the greatest mutant heroes of all time has just revealed exactly the extent of the damage caused by the war against Orchis.
Since the end of the Krakoan era, Xavier has apparently been held within the walls of Greymalkin Prison. Meanwhile, the main X-Men and the Uncanny X-Men embarked on their own efforts to see Charles’ dream continue, largely by providing a safe haven for young mutants in need. Unfortunately, neither were able to ignore the threat that Doctor Ellis’ Greymalkin Prison posed, especially not when it was the source of many villains who continued to hunt and terrorize others simply for the crime of being born as they are.
