There was, however, one major role that Richard Harris would have liked to have had, and the loss bothered him for the rest of his life. Harris desperately wanted to play Gandalf in Peter Jackson’s film. Lord of the Rings trilogy. Many fans thought he would be a fantastic choice. Like many of his future co-stars, he had a background in Shakespeare, which would give him the gravitas needed to play a character such as Gandalf. Additionally, as his casting of Dumbledore shows, he conveys the general persona of a wise old mentor with magical powers. He would have been able to capture the mysticism needed to play Gandalf and probably would have been fantastic at making the transition from Gandalf the Gray to Gandalf the White after his fall fighting the Balrog. However, that wasn’t meant to be. Richard Harris was ultimately not selected to enter the world of Middle-earth. This bothered him for the rest of his life.

Interestingly, Ian McKellen almost ended up playing Dumbledore as well as Gandalf. After Harris’ death, Harry Potter producers asked him if he would consider playing the role. However, Ian McKellen ultimately refused. Richard Harris had, at one point earlier in his career, made disparaging comments about McKellen and two of his closest companions.Kenneth Branagh and Derek Jacobi. He called all three men dispassionate despite their overall talent. McKellen ultimately didn’t feel good about reprising such a beloved and career-defining role from someone who didn’t respect him as a colleague or as an actor. That wouldn’t be what Harris wanted, and it would also have undermined McKellen’s confidence in his abilities.

Gandalf’s defeat by Saruman in the Fellowship of the Ring had a deeper meaning

Gandalf and Saruman were important in The Lord of the Rings, but it was the former’s defeat that established a much deeper connection between them.

Sean Connery was Peter Jackson’s first choice for the role, but he turned down the role after stating he did not understand the script. Anthony Hopkins, who was already known after his chilling performance in The silence of the lambswas also a favorite for the role. It’s still unclear exactly what made him say no to the role, but regardless, he ended up choosing to go in other directions with his career. Patrick Stewart, who starred alongside Sir Ian McKellen in the X-Men films as Charles Xavier to McKellen’s Erik Lehnsherr, was one of the first actors to be offered the role. However, he did not like the storyline and the direction Gandalf’s character was being taken and therefore turned down the role. Ian McKellen was the perfect Gandalf

However, now that he’s the face we associate with the role, it’s impossible to imagine anyone other than the incredible Sir Ian McKellan taking on the role of Gandalf. It feels like it came straight from the pages of Tolkien’s original novel. He’s a fantastic mentor to everyone around him, and he really feels like someone the characters and audience could look to for wisdom. As Gandalf the Grey, he ensures that the character never loses his sense of playfulness. Although Gandalf is, at his core, a wise old man, he still has a fantastic sense of humor. This is why he is able to get along so well with the Hobbits and how he managed to stay true to the Istari’s mission even when the rest of his companions lost sight of what they were supposed to do. However, he also ensures that Gandalf remains an indomitable force when he must charge into battle. His confrontation with the Balrog in The Fellowship of the Ring is one of the most powerful moments of the Lord of the Rings trilogy as a whole.

10 Best Ian McKellen Movies, Ranked

Between Gandalf and Magneto, Sir Ian McKellen has left his mark on a ton of incredible films.

His prowess becomes even more evident when he adopts the persona of Gandalf the White in The Two Towers. There is a certain confidence in his every action once he reaches this high form. Gandalf the White knows less about who he is, one could say he is less in touch with his humanity now that he has gained more power. He has to figure out how to get settled again. Once he does this, he becomes even more of a leader than he already was. He has achieved the status that was previously only afforded to Saruman, to which Gandalf himself deferred when the time was right, and now that he has it, he must be a good leader not only for the Community but for all of Middle Earth. His wisdom has multiplied, as shown when he advises Pippin on what awaits him after death. None of this would have had the same impact without Ian McKellen’s tireless work to ensure he did justice to Tolkien’s beloved character, and it proves time and time again that he was the right choice for the role.
