Nearly a year after Paramount Pictures’ announcement Top Gun 3one of the action franchise’s stars offers an encouraging update on the vaunted trio. Top Gun: Maverick actor Miles Teller says “there’s a lot of excitement” about the follow-up currently in development.

Talk with Collider at the Comic Con Experience (CCXP) in São Paulo, Teller admitted he didn’t know how far Top Gun 3 the script is then waiting for an update. However, he and his co-stars are excited about the upcoming film, insisting lead actor Tom Cruise would “give me enough time” to prepare for the third installment once the filming date is confirmed. “We’ll see what happens. All I know is that Tom said that, since he’s the first to know, he will give me enough time to come back Top Gun shape. And that’s all I asked for. But there is a lots of enthusiasm on both sidesfans and Top Gun team,” Teller said.

Last January, Paramount confirmed that Top Gun 3 was currently in development at the studio. The announcement came a year and a half later Nonconformist was released theatrically, although franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer insisted fans would have to wait an extended period of time before the trio hit theaters worldwide. Maverick was created 36 years after the original Top GunCruise reprising his central role as flight instructor and test pilot, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell.

Top Gun 3 remains in early development

Cruise is set to lead the Top Gun threequel alongside Teller, who starred in Nonconformist as Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, a training pilot and son of Pete’s late best friend, Nick “Goose” Bradshaw. The film will also see Glen Powell return as F/A-18E pilot Jake “Hangman” Seresin, Bradshaw’s rival. Powell echoed Teller’s sentiments months earlier, insisting the prospect of a threesome is “exciting” as he looks forward to the storyline. Meanwhile, Jon Hamm, who played Naval Air Force Commander Vice Admiral Beau “Cyclone” Simpson, in Nonconformistdid not exclude a Top Gun 3 appearance, although he has yet to be approached by producers to reprise the role.
