The following contains major spoilers for Venom War #5, on sale now from Marvel Comics.

Marvel Venom War just gave the original symbiote superhero a whole new look – and it’s awesome.

Venom War #5 finds that the battle between Eddie and Dylan Brock has reached a tragic turn, as the former has been stabbed in the back by the latter. Fortunately, this is anything but a death sentence for the King in Black and instead serves as a turning point for the ongoing fight. This also opens Dylan up to what would be a deadly attack from Meridius, if only it weren’t for the golden bullet his older self throws at him first, leaving him encased in a shiny, golden symbiote suit that even the All-Blood of Carnage can cut through it.

Marvel Venom War The event is the result of two very different, but disturbing, visions of the future that Eddie and Dylan Brock both witnessed during their time in the Eventuality. In each’s case, they saw a future torn apart by war and symbiotes resulting from the other maintaining their bond with the Venom symbiote. These futures seemed completely inevitable no matter who was guarding Venom, as even Peter Parker witnessed a world completely destroyed by his own bond with the symbiote.

Besides what Eddie and Dylan fans are most familiar with, several versions of each of them have been drawn into the ongoing conflict. For Eddie, it was his fellow Kings in Black, future iterations of himself, who stood beside him on the battlefield, except for the villainous Meridius, of course. For Dylan, an older version of himself returned from the future to offer assistance, not even to mention the Sleeper and Flexo symbiotes who chose to stand by young Brock from the start.

The golden Venom suit that young Dylan currently wears was created after a long series of harrowing journeys across different realms and dimensions. After tracking down and making a deal with the Dark Elder God Chthon, this Elder Dylan was able to trade memories of his own life for a golden substance that he couldn’t truly understand. From there, it was just a journey to the darkest corners of the world to find Loki, who brought Dylan to a forge capable of turning the substance into a set of literal golden bullets.
