10 Goku’s Electric Pole helps him topple the competition against the giant Dr. Wheelo

Dragon Ball Z, Movie 2, “The World’s Strongest”

Goku’s Power Pole is barely in play during Dragon Ball Z. The Saiyan’s superior strength and techniques obviously give him more useful options when it comes to dominating in combat. Dragon Ball Z: World’s Strongestthe second film of the anime, is the last time Goku actively uses the Power Pole in combat. Dr. Wheelo is a brilliant scientist whose body was destroyed, leaving his brain operating from a giant mecha. Dr. Wheelo is eager to find Earth’s strongest fighter so he can steal his body and make it the permanent home of his displaced brain. Goku’s Kaio-Ken attack is clearly visible in The strongest in the world as he faces off against Dr. Wheelo’s resilient bio-warriors. Gohan is actually the one who brings the Power Pole to Dr. Wheelo’s Fortress.

He doesn’t use it himself, but it is returned to Goku just in time so he can use it to even the scales against his giant robot opposition. Goku takes advantage of the durability and extendable nature of the Power Pole to be able to knock Dr. Wheelo’s feet out from under him. This attack isn’t the deciding factor in the battle, but it’s still a clever application of the Power Pole and it’s nice to see the weapon featured here. Oddly enough, Dr. Wheelo is actually the first Dragon Ball character who will ever be killed by Goku’s popular Spirit Bomb attack. It has become a common trend in Dragon Ball Zthe films.

9 Melee combat is not an option against the Magic Carrot Monster

Dragon Ball, Episode 9, “Boss Rabbit’s Magic Touch”

Goku attacks Monster Carrot with his Power Pole in Dragon Ball.

The original Dragon Ball is still very much indebted to the roots of Akira Toriyama’s gag series when introducing the Emperor Pilaf saga. Goku encounters some truly confusing obstacles, some of which feel like they’re not even from the same franchise. Monster Carrot is an overwhelming anomaly in that it is a giant anthropomorphic rabbit that has the power to turn anyone it touches into carrots. This magical ability has isolated Monster Carrot with devoted minions – his Rabbit Mob – who help him throw his weight around and terrorize communities to get what he wants.

Goku watches Monster Carrot turn Bulma into a carrot and knows that any conventional hand-to-hand combat is likely to result in a similar fate. In this scenario, Goku’s Power Pole is the perfect tool, since it allows him to keep his distance from this strange enemy and attack it from afar. Monster Carrot isn’t particularly strong, so this battle doesn’t last very long, but it’s still one of the early highlights of Dragon BallThe first batch of episodes. Additionally, Goku uses the Power Pole’s incredible malleability to block Monster Carrot and his Rabbit Mob on the moon so they can’t cause any more trouble.

This leaves Goku with a serious knee injury, which limits his movement and makes him an easier target.

Goku uses his Power Pole to overcome this disadvantage so his extension powers can propel him towards King Piccolo’s face, where he can attack with the working leg. It essentially becomes an overpowered crutch. King Piccolo quickly recognizes the value of Goku’s Power Pole and targets the weapon with his energy attacks so that Goku loses this advantage. 5 Goku uses his electric pole to defend against the fierce conditions of Annin and the Eight Divisions Furnace

Dragon Ball, Episode 153, “The End, The Beginning”

Goku uses his Power Pole to navigate Dragon Ball's Eight Divisions Furnace.

The original Dragon Ball actually makes a rather creative decision to conclude with a series of filler episodes that help celebrate Goku and Chi-Chi’s teamwork before the anime moves on to their joyous nuptials. Goku and Chi-Chi head to the Furnace of Eight Divisions, an elusive realm that acts as a gateway to the Otherworld and uses intense flames to ostensibly prevent Demons from moving freely toward Earth. Goku wants to temporarily extinguish these flames so that Ox-King’s Fire Mountain becomes more hospitable and Chi-Chi’s wedding dress does not catch fire. Goku faces opposition from Annin, the immortal guardian of the Furnace of Eight Divisions. Annin attacks Goku with his sword-like headgear and is very skilled with a guandao blade.

Goku’s Power Pole is essential to defend him against Annin’s attacks. Additionally, Annin can increase her size to dramatic proportions and she attempts to crush Goku and end this nuisance. Once again, Goku’s Power Pole proves crucial to his success during his fight, as it allows him to easily navigate through the rugged terrain of the Fire Kingdom and quickly avoid Annin’s attacks. The Bansho Fan is another useful tool during this encounter, but Goku would probably be a burnt ash without his Power Pole.

Ninja Murasaki is supposed to be one of the Red Ribbon Army’s best recruits, but he is reduced to one-note during his battle against Goku. Goku’s Power Pole app exploded during this ninja assault. For one, Goku plants his Power Pole into the ground after Ninja Murasaki performs an aerial attack, causing him to fall on the weapon during his descent and become completely humiliated.

Ninja Murasaki intensifies this attack when he calls upon his four ninja brothers, all of whom specialize in various weapons. Goku’s Power Pole is once again essential here. 2 A reinvigorated Goku uses his electric pole to destroy Mercenary Tao’s sword during their rematch

Dragon Ball, Episode 63, “The Return of Goku”

Goku breaks Mercenary Tao's sword with his Power Pole in Dragon Ball.

The Red Ribbon Army, in general, is made up of terrifying villains who wield a lot of power. However, Mercenary Tao is an even scarier threat due to his raw strength, powerful energy attacks, and the fact that he has no problem killing anyone who gets in his way. Tao’s Dodon Ray almost kills Goku during their first encounter. Goku returns, stronger than ever thanks to Korin’s training, and he is determined to get his revenge. Tao is shocked to see how much Goku’s strength has increased in such a short time. The two attacks trade evenly as Tao is put more and more on the defensive.

Upa gives Goku his Power Pole, which destroys Tao’s Blade when the two weapons clash. This confuses Tao and makes him even more frantic when it comes to his goal of acquiring Korin’s “sacred water” and becoming stronger. This revenge seemingly leads to Tao’s death – although it is later revealed that his slaughtered body is resurrected in the form of a cyborg – when Goku returns one of Tao’s grenades to him. There’s a lot to process in this fight and it’s a nice encapsulation of Goku’s growing skills as a martial artist and hero.

1 Goku excels in his tambourine fight thanks to the propulsion properties of the electric pole

Dragon Ball, Episode 108, “Goku’s Revenge”

Demon King Piccolo is enough of a threat on his own, but he also gives birth to a handful of dark demonic retainers who act as his personal assassins. Goku helps eliminate all of King Piccolo’s offspring, but he particularly holds a grudge against Tambourine, who is responsible for killing Krillin and destroying his Flying Nimbus. Goku is generally level-headed, even when facing true evil, which makes it all the more intense that he displays such palpable rage during his final fight against Tambourine.

Goku’s power overshadows Tambourine, who attempts to fly away and flee. Goku no longer has his Flying Nimbus to make plane travel easier. However, he turns to his Power Pole to propel him through the air until he is level with the Tambourine, at which point he incinerates him with a Kamehameha. Without the Power Pole, Tambourine could have escaped and formulated a stronger strategy with the help of King Piccolo. It’s a truly inspired use of this weapon that leads to such a cathartic conclusion.
