The Marvel Cinematic Universe eventually introduced Lady Death in Agatha All Along, but both of those films hinted at the character years ago.
The last episode of Agatha throughoutseason 1, “Maiden Mother Crone”, took place largely through flashbacks. The previous episode saw Agatha sacrifice herself to Death. With Agatha dead and buried, Billy returned home to his life as William Kaplan – the teenager whose body he had stolen when Wanda’s Hex above Westview collapsed. In his room, Billy began to notice how much of his experiences on the Witch’s Trail had been shaped by his own personal interests and possessions.
As he remembered telling Agatha that the Road was “exactly as I imagined it”, and Agatha telling him that the Road didn’t really exist, Billy noticed his own figurine of the Wicked Witch of the ‘West of The Wizard of Ozwhose costume Agatha had worn during one of the Route trials. He also noticed a model of an enchanted tree that resembled those along the witches’ route. “Maiden Mother Crone” then resumed with a flashback to Agatha’s past, beginning with the day she gave birth to her son, Nicholas Scratch.
As she began labor, Death appeared and Agatha begged for her son’s life. Death said it could only offer Agatha’s son more time, but it disappeared before telling Agatha how long. Agatha raised Nicholas alone and was seen killing other witches as they traveled together, taking their power to survive. When he became a young boy, Nicholas began singing while traveling from clan to clan with his mother. Together, Agatha and Nicholas composed a song about walking “the witches’ road”, which Nicholas began singing in taverns to earn them money.
Agatha would gather clans to summon the Road and when their efforts inevitably failed, she accused them of being unworthy witches, prompting them to attack her so that she could steal their magic and their lives.
Finally, when Nicholas was still a young child, the day came that Agatha had dreaded: the day she woke up to find Nicholas dead. While Agatha was resting Nicholas, she was approached by a young witch who had heard the Ballad of the Witches’ Road. The song became the myth of the Witches’ Road, and witches began to look to Agatha to guide them to the legendary Road.

Agatha All Along confirms the death of the MCU and highlights the series’ biggest problem
Episode 7 of Agatha All Along finally revealed the true identity of Aubrey Plaza’s Rio Vidal, but the supposed twist comes as no surprise to Marvel fans.
The Truth About the Witches Road was the final twist of Agatha throughoutand one that most fans weren’t expecting. The series’ previous big reveals (namely the confirmation that Teen was Billy Maximoff and Rio Vidal was Death) were hardly a surprise to the majority of Marvel fans. Leaks had suggested these revelations were coming and, even without leaks, the clues Agatha throughout the downfalls around these two characters weren’t exactly subtle.
With almost all the loose ends seemingly tied up before the season’s penultimate episode reached its final scenes, there was little reason to assume that another huge twist was coming. But there was more than just shock factor to make this final reveal work. While not as widespread a theory as Billy Maximoff and Death, some fans had speculated that Billy created the Witch Road on Agatha throughout. The same hints that Billy himself noticed at the end of episode 8 were enough to tip some fans off to the fact that Billy had used Wanda’s chaos magic to create the witch route like he had always imagined it.
The big twists and turns of Agatha All Along
- Teen is Billy Maximoff – Episode 5, “Darkest Hour / Wake Thy Power”
- Rio Vidal is Death – Episode 7, “Death’s Hand in Mine”
- Agatha Harkness Invented the Witches Road – Episode 9, “Maiden Mother Crone”
The season finale’s confirmation that the Witch Road had never really existed was a highlight. This was not due to surprise that Billy was the one who created the Witch’s Road, but because of the importance of Agatha Harkness in originating the myth of the Road. Agatha throughout had worried about whether Agatha was truly a villain to herself or whether she had compassion in her heart. The revelation that the Ballad of the Witches’ Road was composed by Agatha and her son transformed the song into an act of the maternal love Agatha once felt for Nicholas.
Additionally, the dramatic scene in which Agatha began using the song and story of the Witch’s Road to lure various witches to their doom revealed that the creation of the Witch’s Road – as an idea – was also the moment when Agatha’s true evil was unleashed. Although she had been killing witches alongside Nicholas for years before, at that point Agatha abandoned all restraint and devoted herself entirely to killing witches for her own survival, making her the witch that all the witches feared.
