The following contains spoilers for The diplomat Season 2, which begins Thursday, October 31 on Netflix.
The diplomat Season 2 has all the hallmarks of an award-winning drama. The Netflix series may be a political thriller, but creator Debora Cahn, whose credits include the last two seasons of Country and four of The west wingthe seven seasons – built it on strong relationships worth investing in. In this series, world politics comes second only to US Ambassador Kate Wyler zipping her pants with paper clips.
With the collateral damage from Season 1’s car bomb leaving everyone on edge, Kate has more to worry about than her own political ambitions. Resentment is rife in the ranks, a love triangle is ignored, and British Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge is on the warpath. The last thing Kate needs is a visit from Vice President Grace Penn, but the addition of West wing the former Allison Janney in the role opposite a superb Keri Russell catapults season 2 to new heights.
The Diplomat Season 2 Creates More Political Drama
The show’s talented ensemble generates plenty of tension
The diplomat Season 2 is essential viewing for a number of reasons, including its perfect cast. From minor characters like Margaret Roylin (downplayed by a complicit Celia Imrie) to favorites such as Kate’s husband Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell), no one is wasted. Cahn has concocted a story of collusion between world governments that rivals a Shakespearean tragedy.as heroes and villains strive to outwit each other with increasingly complex plans.
In the aftermath of the bombing, Kate lost some allies. The diplomat Season 2 puts the Prime Minister – who Kate believes is responsible – front and center. Rory Kinnear is masterful as a petulant child whose intellect is buried under insecurity. Trowbridge is continually at odds throughout the season with the icy Austin Dennison; their contradictory ideologies give The diplomat a certain backbone. One is emotionally cut off, while the other is unable to decide anything without input from elsewhere. The fact that both are won over by Kate’s haphazard approach to political strategy says more about both men than any words.
Hal Wyler: Maybe the vice president could survive this situation if the White House fought for her. So why aren’t they? Because they don’t like her enough to put her in the back of group photos.
Hal remains a career politician, who hides his intentions behind romantic platitudes and keeps Kate in check by back-channeling at every opportunity. She is still convinced that Hal only wants her to become vice president to facilitate his own rise to high office. Sewell continues to put together his career-best performance. Hal is confident, but never arrogant. His clandestine telephone calls hide massive revelations, but the outcome is rather favorable. And he continues to fight for Kate, no matter the risk.
Due to these complicated dynamics, The Diplomat Season 2 never seems boring, pedestrian or stereotypical. Whether in a CIA hideout or at an official ceremony, Hal stands firm against anyone who would seek to harm his wife or his career. He and Kate are one of television’s most dysfunctional power couples, who feel more connected through chaos than clarity. But it is the women of The diplomat who really take this season on their shoulders.

Allison Janney is a revelation in The Diplomat
The public will never see Grace Penn coming
Allison Janney makes an impressive arrival in the world of The diplomat like Grace Penn, who arrives in the UK as a show of solidarity. Grace is a formidable politician who finds every weakness Kate tries to hide and outperforms everyone except Hal. Likewise, Janney is a scene-stealer who comes dangerously close to surpassing Keri Russell. The Oscar winner is compelling from the start, and even more impressive is the fact that she pulls off commanding scenes with subtlety instead of grandstanding.
Despite her mission, Grace’s motivations may be more focused on self-preservation than anything altruistic. She is an example of how The diplomatGrace’s characteristic ambiguities became more pronounced in Season 2. Grace has been passed over by her political party for nonconformity, and it becomes clear that President Rayburn’s reasons for replacing her are more dangerous than meets the eye. appears at first glance. As the season progresses, audiences wonder if Grace is an enemy of Kate’s or if the truth lies in another gray area.
Grace Penn: You may not want my help, but you need it.
The diplomat Season 2 comes into its own in later episodes, when Grace and Kate’s relationship seems destined to end acrimoniously. Cahn throws yet another curveball and puts the Netflix audience behind. Grace is an integral part of maintaining the tension of The diplomat until the very end, and audiences will be mesmerized by Janney’s performance – even tougher than the work she did in the Netflix action film Lou.

The Diplomat still belongs to Keri Russell
Season 2 is an even better showcase for the star
While The diplomat Season 2 is bolstered by the addition of Janney, it’s Keri Russell who continues to be the star of the show – both literally and in the sense of ownership. The main reason the show is essential viewing — and what’s pushing it to become even more of a prestige show for Netflix than House of Cards – is Russell’s refreshing portrayal of Kate Wyler. The public is okay with all the political drama and manipulation because of Russell. The star of The Americans presents Kate as an ultra-savvy individual with almost supernatural people skills and diplomatic savvy on a global scale. Kate may appear disorganized and in a perpetual state of disarray, but she gives the show all the humanity it needs.
This is vital when navigating a political landscape that is not unlike real life. Mentions of Russia, Ukraine and unrest in the Middle East suggest that The diplomat always accept the risk. There are no safe options when it comes to discussing politics in a drama, but this series has a relevance and poignancy that sets it apart from lesser dramas, as it delights in revealing that politicians like Kate and those around her are truly flawed. Without any degree of weakness, these characters would only be plotting and planning their way through the season. But Russell, as Kate Wyler, provides moments of real human drama that cut through the noise and ensure that The diplomat continues to deliver results at all levels.
