Sitges Festival: Day 10. The journey of a small dinosaur, the wild movement of the clay and the end

Last day at the Sitges Film Festival, ten days full of cinema culminating with Diplodocus by Wojtek Wawszczyk and Sauvages by Claude Barras

The last day of the Sitges Festival has arrived and several circles have closed, on the one hand the first film seen at the festival was a claymotion and also the last one wasafter 30 films, but we also attended a conference on French extremism with some directors who gave birth to the movement. One of the things that made me most excited was that my TFG was about this movement, its origin, relevance and development, and having the filmmakers in front of me was nice.

Today the day was even quieter, since I was alone We made a double animated film, the first was at the Auditori and that was it Diplodocus by Wojtek Wawszczyk, the first Polish animated film with 3D effectwhich is quite strange, given that 3D hasn’t established itself that much worldwide and at the Festival it was seen in normal 2D, so its great appeal wasn’t present. Diplodocus tells us the story of a small dinosaur who manages to travel between the different cartoons and comics of his creator, taking him on a beautiful journey that will mix different animation effects and blending with the real image in some scenes.

The bet is interesting and we must also take into account that it is an adaptation of a comic, so here we go the terrain of the meta-referential which turns out to be a lot of fun in a film aimed at a younger audience. Diplodocus has a very obvious comparison and at the risk of ruining the big plot twist, which I am obviously referring to The Lego MovieWhere reality ends up playing a crucial role in the story of its characters.

In this case Diplodocus’ life is turned upside down compared to his origin, when his creator decides to delete the pages in which the little dinosaur appears and causes the disappearance of his parents.. The Polish film may not be a great milestone in world animation, but its story is very entertaining and the characters are sure to make both children and adults smile and its final section on the power of creation and alteration of works is very fun to watch.

The last film of the Festival screened at the Prado, Sadvancesthe new claymotion film by Claude Barras, author of The life of courgettes. On this occasion he presents us with a story about the Amazon and its deforestation, an idea that has been forgotten over the years and that absolutely needs to be told again.. The story focuses on three characters, the protagonist, her cousin and a monkey who was orphaned due to deforestation at the beginning of the film and due to certain circumstances the characters have to travel and live in the jungle until they find each other.

Without a doubt, the great animation surprise and one of my favorites of the Festival, claymotion is super beautiful and transports us to that jungle full of clay colors and figures, so it’s an incredible result that’s hard to believe until you have a movie section. The message is also well executed, it may be simple, but you have to understand that ultimately it is meant for children. So Savages It is one of the most special recommendations of the Festival and it is a shame that it did not win the Festival award in the animation category.

sitges festival

Time at the Sitges Festival ended with youa conversation between Alexandre Aja, Fabrice Du Welz, Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury on French extremismthe origin of the movement, its development and its influence on current cinema. A very interesting speech and it was the best way to end this Festival for the importance that this movement had in my studies and so I ended up closing a circle that I didn’t expect to close in my first Sitges. A Sitges Festival that made me want to live more and more experiences like marathons, so, without a doubt, I want to go back next year.
