A new Studio Ghibli-themed cookbook released in the US recreates nostalgic food from some of its most iconic films, including Howl’s Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro and many others.

Via a press release, Insight Editions recently released a Studio Ghibli-inspired cookbook with several unofficial bento box recipes from films, such as My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki’s delivery service, Princess Mononoke, Castle in the Sky, Howl’s Moving Castle And Spirited Away. The cardboard Studio Ghibli Bento Cookbook was released on September 3, 2024, with 144 pages filled with illustrations and even a history of bento boxes as an introduction. Studio Ghibli-themed cookbook offers fans bento recipes for fan-favorite Miyazaki films

The book, by Barbara Rossi, Azuki and Andie Ho, teases: “Prepare delicious bento lunches modeled after your favorite Studio Ghibli movie characters. The easy-to-follow recipes are fun to make and fun to eat!” Recipes listed include gyoza, mochi, chicken tatsuta, miso-sesame green beans, fried zucchini with ponzu sauce, chicken karaage, teriyaki and green beans.

Although accessing other official Ghibli books proves incredibly difficult since its online store, Donguri Sora, does not ship internationally, the store stocks several for Japanese customers, including the recent Kiki’s delivery service cookbook earlier this year – the last of the Ghibli’s dining table book series. Written in clear text and simple language, recipes like “Magic Berry Soda” and “Black Cat Cake Lollipop” have been made easily understandable for children and adults alike. To accompany these recipes, Howl’s Moving Castle received an official kitchen utensil set, consisting of a Calcifer spatula and frying pan for shapely omelets. My Neighbor Totoro also received a set including a bamboo wood plate and cutlery.
