Thanks to series like Peacock Twisted metal and HBO The last of usThe 2020s seemed to be the decade where movie and TV studios finally started making good video game adaptations. Far from being one and done, these two television series were quickly renewed for a second season. While The last of us the direction is clear thanks to the narrative orientation of this franchise, Twisted metal the upcoming second season is a bit more of a question mark.
Make no mistake, fans haven’t seen the last of their favorites like Quiet, Sweet Tooth, Agent Stone and the rest of the post-apocalyptic marauders looking to stop John Doe from completing his mysterious delivery. It’s just that, with the car combat franchise’s video game series being so loosely plotted, the potential is there for the story to go anywhere. Want to know what pit stops might happen along the way? Here’s everything we know about Twisted metal Season two.
It’s Mad Max meets the postman, sort of
The first season of Twisted metal presents audiences with a reality where society collapsed in the early 2000s. Star Anthony Mackie headlines the series as John Doe, a fast-talking delivery driver (known in this universe as name “slag”) suffering from an unfortunate case of amnesia. At the start of the first season, John is offered a permanent residence in the city of New San Francisco. All he has to do to take advantage of this opportunity is to successfully collect and deliver a mysterious package by driving it across the continental United States.
During his journey, John Doe reluctantly joins forces with a car thief named Quiet (Stephanie Beatriz), determined to avenge his brother’s murder. Their path to New San Francisco is fraught with pitfalls, including a ruthless lawman in the form of Agent Stone (Thomas Hayden Church) and a crazy clown named Sweet Tooth (a common role voiced by actor Will Arnett and played by wrestler Samoa Joe), who will stop at nothing to satisfy his need for blood.
At the end of the first season, John accomplished his mission by delivering the mysterious package, which turned out to be a pint of ice cream, to the enigmatic Raven (Neve Campbell) in New San Francisco. Succeeding in his endeavor, John discovers that Raven has been testing him to see if he has what it takes to be her pilot in an upcoming vehicular combat tournament known as Calypso’s Twisted Metal competition, an event that will free undoubtedly the spirit of Twisted metal franchise like never before.
What do we know about the Twisted Metal season 2 story?
The vehicular manslaughter tournament to end all tournaments is coming
As stated in the previous synopsis of season 1 (and much more excessively by Twisted metal season finale), the second season of this wildly popular series will finally bring the series’ characters together for the car combat tournament that will end all car combat tournaments. This is the same tournament that laid the foundation for the narrative elements built into the franchise since its initial game, first released in 1995 on the Sony PlayStation, at such an early time in the console’s lifespan that the games were still coming out in long boxes!
According to showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith, the TV series deliberately spent the vast majority of season 1 introducing guest characters like Preacher (Jason Mantzoukas), Bloody Mary (Chole Fineman), and Miranda Watts (Jamie Neumann) so that they could have a lot more. Have fun in the second season by throwing them in the same place and making them rip during the tournament. The connective tissue between these characters will continue to grow and then pay off when forced to fight to the death.
Having previously worked on the hugely popular Netflix series Cobra KaiMichael Jonathan Smith is no stranger to building a television season around a central tournament. During a conversation with NBC InsiderSmith outlined his intentions for the upcoming season, telling them:
“I want everything to feel connected to the tournament, even though we’re not there yet. I hope it will surprise and delight people who saw the episode 10 finale and [were] like, “I want to see more of this in a tournament setting.” “My goal is to capture that. »
Based on these comments and the events of the Season 1 finale, it’s safe to say that the Twisted Metal tournament will be front and center throughout Season 2, and there’s also a very good chance that we discovered more about John Doe’s sister, Dollface. , but we’ll talk about that in a moment.
A superhero, Scream Queen, an elite wrestler and many more
Twisted metal is led on screen by star Anthony Mackie (who also serves as executive producer) as John Doe, the talented but amnesiac pilot who seeks to uncover the truth about his past while trying to survive in a post-war hellscape. apocalyptic.. Mackie is, of course, best known for his role in the MCU as Sam Wilson, aka The Falcon, and the all-new Captain America in the upcoming sequel, Captain America: Brave New World.
For much of the first season, Mackie was joined by his closest ally, Stephanie Beatriz’s Quiet. This actress has appeared frequently on television screens in popular series like Modern family And Brooklyn nine-nine while lending his voice to animated series like Bob’s Burgers, BoJack Horseman, And Big mouth. Another John Doe ally, Neve Campbell’s Raven, is also likely to return, perhaps with more screen time than ever (if her schedule for the next Cry VII will allow it, that is).
Joe Seanoa, better known to AEW fans as Samoa Joe, will round out the team of familiar returning faces. It depicts the intimidating physical presence of Sweet Tooth, while that of Will Arnett (of Arrested development and the ultra-popular podcast Less intelligent fame) crazy comedic stylings ensure that this killer clown’s personality is always as exaggerated as his appearance.
Of course, Twisted metal fans may be more excited to hear about some of the new faces they’ll see: people like Anthony Carrigan, who played NoHo Hank in the HBO series. Barry And WHO signed on to play the role of the brains behind Twisted metal vehicle combat tournament, Calypso. Mentioned briefly during Twisted metal first season, Calypso will play a vital role in season two and promises to grant the winner’s wish. Although it’s entirely likely that whoever wins this tournament will wish they hadn’t if the video game franchise is anything to go by.
Other upcoming additions to the cast include actors Richard de Klerk (Designated survivor), Patty Guggenheim (She-Hulk: lawyer), and Tiana Okoye (The right place), in undisclosed roles. Showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith also announced that fan-favorite characters Mr. Grimm and Axel would also debut this season, although the actors playing them have remained quiet.
Dollface, John Doe’s apparent sister, is also expected to play an increased role. It remains to be seen whether Peacock will choose an established actor to bring a little more seriousness to the role or stick with body double Sadiqua Bynum.
The tournament starts in 2025
Season two of Twisted metal wasn’t always a sure thing, but after all ten episodes of Season 1 premiered in July 2023 and became Peacock’s most frenzied comedy yet, the writing was more or less on the wall. In December 2023, star Anthony Mackie revealed that season two was on the way during his presentation at The Game Awards.
Production on season two moved from New Orleans to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where cameras began rolling in July 2024. Footage shared on social media showed Anthony Mackie standing on a set built to look like exactly in New San Francisco, the very place where his initial journey ended in the first season. According to PWInsider, filming should end in October 2024.
Now that the pedal is firmly pressed to the proverbial metal, fans can expect to see the second season of Twisted metal soon, but not immediately. If production wraps as planned later this month, then the editing process will begin and, in all likelihood, the second season of Twisted metal won’t be ready for release until at least summer 2025. In the meantime, Peacock subscribers can stream all episodes of the first season to have as much fun as humanly possible during an apocalypse.
