Shaun of the Dead Actor Opens Up About Huge Mistake During Filming

Jessica Hynes, who played Shaun’s friend Yvonne in Shaun of the Deadrevealed that Edgar Wright made a costly mistake while filming the 2004 hit zombie film. Shaun of The Dead was the first installment in the Cornetto trilogy, followed by Warm Fuzz (2007) and The end of the world (2013).

Directed by Edgar Wright and starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, the film is widely acclaimed, with a score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes. The comedy follows friends Shaun and Ed as they navigate their way through a zombie apocalypse in London, aiming to take refuge in their local pub, The Winchester, while cleverly poking fun at the zombie genre. In a recent interview with Rant screenHynes revealed that at one point the Winchester set had to be completely rebuilt.

“What I remember about that film is that I was on set outside the pub, and I remember thinking… I even said to Edgar [Wright],’I think you are missing a photo. I think you are missing a photo.” Hynes remembers, adding, “And he said to me, ‘What?’ Never mind. No, no, no. And then six months later, we came back, and we had to completely rebuild the ad because he missed the shot“.

A key shot was missed by Edgar Wright

The scene in question shows Yvonne arriving with the army and brandishing a golf club, saving Shaun and Liz as they exit the pub into a horde of zombies. Earlier in the film, audiences are introduced to Yvonne in a scene that humorously highlights the uncanny similarities between her apocalypse group and Shaun’s own survival team. The last time we see Yvonne is crucial to the film, as it provides a satisfying resolution following the deaths of the majority of Shaun’s friends and key characters, including Ed, played by Frost.

Hynes and Pegg previously worked together on the TV show Spaced (1999)as well as many other members of the Shaun of the Dead cast, including Frost, Peter Serafinowicz, Julia Deakin and Reece Shearsmith. Speaking to Screen Rant about the failed shot, she said: “Maybe it’s a bit of a precursor for me as a script supervisor, because what came before Shaun of the Dead was Spaced, which was the series I wrote with Simon. [Pegg]. In some ways, I don’t think Shaun of the Dead would have happened without Spaced, and I created Spaced.”

Although he no longer stars in any further films in the Cornetto trilogy, Hynes’ involvement in its creation is undisputed. Fortunately, the accident did not affect the $38 million profit from the film, which was shot on a budget of just $6 million.
