Robert Downey Jr.’s unexpected return to the MCU revealed at San Diego Comic-Con has caused a stir among fans and his co-stars alike, particularly Jeremy Renner.
It seems that Downey Jr. and Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, wanted to keep the secret as much as possible, informing very few people. Captain Marvel actress Brie Larson said she was completely surprised after speaking to Feige shortly before SDCC. Gwyneth Paltrow also showed her confusion when responding to RDJ’s Instagram post, and Florence Pugh was completely stunned when asked about Downey Jr.’s return in a video interview.
Renner’s shock
Actor Jeremy Renner, best known for his role as Hawkeye, was one of the many who didn’t know about it. In a recent interview with US Weekly, Renner revealed that he learned the news online, despite being part of an active group chat with RDJ and the other original Avengers.
“I had no idea. “That son of a bitch didn’t tell me anything.” Renner confessed. “We’re good friends. There’s the Avengers family chat. The original six. He didn’t say a word. I got online and started flooding his phone with messages like, ‘What’s going on?’ Have you been hiding this from us this whole time?’ It’s exciting news. “I’m very, very excited.”
Additionally, Renner was asked about the possibility of reprising his role as Clint Barton in the upcoming Avengers films. Although he did not officially confirm his participation, he was very enthusiastic about the idea.
“You have Downey back, you have the Russo brothers back. “This is a direction where Marvel will succeed,” She said. “The Avengers movies have always been fan favorites and they have so many wonderful characters. It’s going to be a challenge to get everyone together. But I’m excited. We’ll see. I think we probably will. It’s all very new. They just made the announcement. They need to start planning it.”
Robert Downey Jr. Returns as Doctor Doom
Robert Downey Jr.’s casting as Doctor Doom is, without a doubt, an unexpected and exciting turn of events for MCU fans. After making an indelible mark as Tony Stark/Iron Man, his return in a completely opposite role promises to bring a new dynamic to the Marvel Universe.
The reaction of Lexi Rabe, who played Tony’s daughter Morgan Stark in “Avengers: Endgame,” also caught attention. She responded to Downey’s Instagram post with one word: “Dad?”Fans have been speculating, half-jokingly, about the possibility of Morgan appearing in “Avengers: Secret Wars”, with Doctor Doom telling him: “I hate you 3000”.
Avengers: Doomsday and Secret Wars
The next film, “Avengers: Doomsday,” is set to hit theaters on May 1, 2026, followed by “Avengers: Secret Wars” on May 7, 2027. Both will be directed by the Russo brothers, who return to the MCU after helming hits such as “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame.”
In a statement following the SDCC panel, the Russo brothers expressed their excitement at the prospect of working with Marvel again. “Being able to create stories and explore characters from the Marvel Universe has been a lifelong dream for us, and we’ve found a strong connection with audiences in every film we’ve made. “We’re thrilled to once again collaborate with Kevin, Lou and the entire Marvel team to take this epic storytelling adventure to surprising new places for fans and ourselves.”
The return of Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and the promise of more Avengers films have reinvigorated fans’ excitement for the future of the MCU. With a stellar cast and the Russo Brothers directing, the next few years promise to be exciting for Marvel fans.
