[SDCC24] Penguin’s new trailer sets us up for his epic battle against Sofia Falcone.

The new trailer shown at Penguin Comic-Con shows Oz (Colin Farrell) trying to take over Gotham’s underworld.

HBO and Max wasted no time and used a panel at San Diego Comic-Con to share the trailer with Hall H attendees, and now you can see what’s to come when war breaks out in Gotham City.

A trailer that brings a lot of conflicts

Following the events of Batman (where the Riddler kills Carmine Falcone), there’s a power vacuum that Colin Farrell’s Oz seems capable of filling. But as he tries to become Gotham’s new kingpin of crime, he encounters an unexpected enemy: Sophia Falcone. Filmmaker Matt Reeves commented at Comic-Con that the original idea for Batman II was to focus on Oz taking over the underworld, but the idea changed to this TV series.

It’s also confirmed that The Penguin will debut on HBO and Max on September 19, a day after Agatha All Along premieres on Disney+.

The Rise of Oz in Gotham

Showrunner Lauren LeFranc recently described the series as a “Scarface-style story.” “It’s a story about Oz coming to power before he came to power,” LeFranc told Entertainment Weekly. “We are in the world of Oz. We live in a world beneath the city. Oz is a character who pulls the strings, but he’s not always trustworthy. He is very smart and methodical, but also very sensitive. “You can’t predict what he’s going to do.”

A demo at Comic-Con also featured Shazam! Actor Mark Strong has revealed that he appears to be playing a younger version of Carmine Falcone, originally played by John Turturro in Batman. Reeves confirmed during the panel that Farrell will reprise his role as The Penguin in The Batman II, which is hardly surprising news. Filming will begin next year.

The Penguin Comic-Con trailer left fans with the promise of intense action and an epic battle for control of Gotham.

A closer look at the plot

The narrative of the series delves into the dark world of Gotham, as Oz struggles to consolidate his power in an empire riven by betrayal and weak alliances. The series promises to explore the complexity of Oz’s character, his cunning and unusual method of climbing the criminal hierarchy. Batman fans can expect to see how Carmine Falcone’s legacy affects Sofia and her struggle to maintain control, which will feature a mix of wills and strategies between the main characters.

Confirmation of Farrell’s involvement in Batman II adds to the excitement, ensuring that the Penguin arc will continue to grow in future installments of the Batman universe.

Expectations and comparisons

Compared to other products in the DC universe, Penguin seems to have opted for a narrative that focuses on character development and the political intrigue of organized crime. This series has the potential to offer a fresher and more realistic look at the world of Gotham, similar to what The Sopranos did with the world of the Mafia.
