During a Transformers panel at Comic-Con, a clip was shown showing Starscream and his history with Megatron.
The clip is also the first time we hear Starscream speak, and his voice turns out to be very familiar. At the end of the clip, the fan-favorite villain is confirmed to be played by Steve Buscemi, an amazing casting choice!
The preview features Chris Hemsworth as Orion Pax, Brian Tyree Henry as D-16, Keegan-Michael Key as B-127 aka Bumblebee, and Scarlett Johansson as Elita-1. These characters are captured and brought before the elite warriors known as Cybertron’s High Guardian. At this meeting, Bee recognizes the leader as Starscream. However, when Starscream orders the four to kneel, D-16, also known as Megatron, refuses. This triggers their first fight and D-16 ends up damaging Starscream’s voice.
The casting of Steve Buscemi as Starscream
The film’s director, Josh Cooley, commented after the clip: “Do you know who this is? Steve Buscemi is the voice of Starscream. The first option. “We called him and he said yes…I’m a huge Lebowski fan, so this was a dream come true.”
Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura said of the film in general: “The original story is incredibly rich. If we try to do this in live action, it will cost us $500 million… You’re going to experience robots in a way that nothing has been done before. You’re familiar with Optimus and Megatron, but we’re dealing with Orion Pax and D-16. “These kids are different, but we still plant the seeds that lead you to the characters you love.”
Cooley added: “These are characters we know as enemies, but I really enjoy seeing how they’re enemies. “I’ve never seen this before in any version of Transformers.”
The relationship between Orion Pax and D-16
Henry described the transformation between Orion Pax and D-16 from friends to enemies as “heartbreaking” for the two main characters. He continued: “Losing a friend is one of the worst breakups, worse than losing a lover. Friendship is the perfect family. I still think about the friends I lost in the third grade… To see that these two famous characters actually had a friendship and lost it, to see what it was like, is very sad.
Hemsworth commented on his take on the role of Optimus Prime: “What Peter Cullen has done with the character is incredible, iconic, and it’s both inspiring and terrifying when he’s trying to play the character.” The goal was never to look or sound like Peter Cullen. “This is the younger, braver version of Optimus Prime, before he became the omnipresent and wise guy we know and love.” Transformers One opens in theaters on September 20.
Steve Buscemi: The perfect choice for the cream of the stars
The inclusion of Steve Buscemi as Starscream has created huge expectations among fans. Her distinctive voice and ability to bring complex characters to life ensure an unforgettable performance. This new focus on the relationship between Orion Pax and D-16, known as Optimus Prime and Megatron, adds a layer of depth not previously explored in the franchise.
The film not only offers amazing action and effects but also a rich and emotional narrative. Josh Cooley’s direction and the producers’ vision seek to provide fans with a unique experience that traces the origins of these iconic characters.
Aside from the amazing voice acting, the production of Transformers One is a great effort. The collaboration between a talented cast and a dedicated creative team has resulted in a film that explores new territories in the Transformers universe. From the visual effects to the narration, every aspect of the film has been carefully crafted to deliver an unforgettable cinematic experience.
