Kevin Feige explains where the inspiration for the black leather suits used in the original Mutant films came from.

When the X-Men made their film debut in 2000, they surprised many fans by appearing in black leather suits instead of the colorful stripes that comic book readers and fans of the animated series were used to. This stylistic decision was eventually explained by Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, who said the choice was a success for the Keanu Reeves-starring film.

Effect of matrix on dynamic elements

According to Feige, the X-Men’s black leather suits are inspired by The Matrix, which debuted in 1999. In an interview with ComicBook.com’s Brandon Davis, Feige said that studio executives want to repeat the success of The Matrix using the same aesthetic for mutants.

Feige explains: “There were studio executives who knew that The Matrix was a huge hit and they were wearing black leather, so ‘Put them in black leather!’ This simple wardrobe decision was driven by a desire to capture the same audience drawn to The Matrix. While the black leather look was not enthusiastically received by all fans, it seemed to be a winning formula at the time.

Many fans of the comics and animated series were hoping to see costumes that were more faithful to the original versions. Even the latest animated series X-Men 97 couldn’t help but poke fun at this issue. In one scene, Cable questions his uniform and Cyclops replies, “What did you expect? Black skin?”

A classic fit on the horizon

However, it looks like Marvel is correcting this choice with the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine movie. In trailers and promotional materials, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in a ridiculously-accurate costume, complete with a bright yellow pattern. Feige Jackman finally revealed the importance of donning the classic costume, much to the delight of Mutant comics fans.

“Hugh Jackman has never been seen in the character’s most iconic costume, being Superman in 10 movies and never wearing a Superman costume,” Feige told Variety. “This is Wolverine’s proof that it doesn’t have to be. “The character is more than the costume.”

The X-Men for the MCU

In addition to Jackman’s return, other characters from the X-Men franchise have made cameos in the MCU multiverse, including Kelsey Grammer as Beast and Patrick Stewart as Professor X-Men in the MCU, with Feige hinting that the lineup will include a mix. Fan favorite characters and more obscure from the comics.

“Deadpool and Wolverine feature a lot of great characters from the dynamic saga. There are a lot of great characters in all of Fox’s X-Men movies. And there are tons of great X-Men characters that never made it to the big screen. So I think, as we always try to do, like we did when we did the Spider-Man deal with Sony, you’ll see a mix of characters that you’ve probably seen before and characters that you’ve never seen before. Feige told Gizmodo.

The heritage of black leather clothes
