Director Rupert Sanders shared with Vanity Fair his thoughts on the casting of the main characters. “Between the bill and the twigs I did not do any tests,” he explained. “I invited them to dinner when they arrived in Prague and I felt like a nervous father to see if there was a spark between them, because you never know. And they were great. “They spent time together and immediately hit it off.”
Inspired by James O’Barr’s comic, Raven is a revenge story where Eric is brought back from the dead with the help of a raven. Sanders commented that the theme of the comic appealed to him deeply, making him want to adapt Raven for a modern audience. His appreciation for “emo” music influenced his decision.
The director said: “What attracted me was the possibility of a dark romance about loss, grief and the veil between life and death and how to find it. “Look, I grew up listening to Joy Division and The Cure, and this movie is a little bit like a Cure song: Melancholy’s Beauty.”
