Penguin’s dark journey
When Penguin comes to Max in September, the series will offer a street-level view of Gotham City’s criminal underworld following the events of Batman. A power vacuum is created with the death of Carmine Falcone (John Turturro). Among the contenders for the criminal throne is his right-hand man, Oz. However, in order to build his own legacy from the ruins of Falcone’s former domain, Oz must face many challenges.
Colin Farrell, who plays Oswald or Oz in the series, talked about what fans can expect. “She’s dark, that’s all I can say about her. It’s really dark. He’s really tough, I think, he was really doing it. Not that I didn’t have fun, I just had an incredibly good time doing it.
It’s incredibly violent. It is to rise to something that one always dreams of, which is a certain power or social status. The death of Carmine Falcone at the end [The Batman] “There’s a lot of people trying to fill that void in Gotham and take that power, and this is Oswald’s journey of trying to get to the top through unusual obstacles.”
The future of the Bat-verse and DCU
New DCU co-presidents James Gunn and Peter Safran have been hard at work rebooting what was already the DCEU, and announced that the first project in the mix will be the adult animated series Creation Commando, which debuts this fall. This puts that project and Penguin in the same release window. However, it’s not entirely clear if Reeves’ universe is parallel to the DCU, although it’s expected to exist in its own singular universe.
Penguin promises to be a series that not only explores the dark side of Gotham, but also delves into the complex character of Oswald Cobblepot, detailing his relentless quest for power. With talented casting and visionary direction from Matt Reeves, this series is sure to captivate audiences and add another layer of depth to the already rich Batman universe.
