Sailor Moon’s magical costume thanks to a cosplayer.

Find out how a Japanese cosplayer brought the famous Sailor Moon transformation costume to life with pure magic and skill.

In a world where fantasy intersects with reality, Aurora Tapestry becomes a bridge between the beloved anime and its realistic expression. One of the most iconic moments of 90’s anime, Sailor Moon’s transformation sequence has crossed the screen to appear in amazing cosplay costumes. The artist behind this creation is a Japanese cosplayer known as Princess Usako, whose passion for Usagi Tsukino led her to translate the heroine’s magical transformation into a wearable piece of art.

Creating an icon

Princess Usako, famous for her paintings of Usagi and other sea guardians, shares her creative process on X and her personal blog. What started as a dream became a reality by using nearly 18 meters of French wire tape, sewing reflective fabric on each side, ensuring that the piece of clothing glowed with magical girl power under any light. This new outfit is meant to capture the essence of Usagi’s time as Sailor Moon and “Moon Prism Power, Awaken!” It is well made. As the magical medallion emits the energy streams that form his iconic sailor uniform.

The dress features ribbons arranged in a way that evokes the transformation sequence, flowing from a replica of Usagi’s transformation brooch adorning the center of the bodice. Princess Usako uses a fully flesh-colored leotard, on which structured ribbons are attached to a hook system, allowing the design to maintain its flexible and fluid shape when worn.

A long awaited dream

This isn’t the first time Princess Usako has tried to capture the magic of Sailor Moon’s transformation in cosplay form. Ten years ago, she tried to make a 30-meter pink ribbon dress sewn on a tiger, although she had problems with the structure of the dress, which was losing shape every time it was worn. However, her persistence and evolution in sewing techniques has brought this hobby to fruition, which she now celebrates as a personal triumph and gift to her fan community.

The result is not only a work of textile engineering, but a piece that captures the spirit and magic of Sailor Moon, as evidenced by the enthusiasm on social media. The images shared by Princess Usako show not only the outfit, but also the love and affection for a character that inspires generations.

Cultural and tourist event

Sailor Moon’s influence extends beyond cosplay and merchandise. Usagi’s real-life hometown has recently seen a surge in tourism, as manhole covers adorned with official artwork from Naoko Takeuchi’s manga have also been turned into sought-after business cards.
