James Tynion IV, Fernando Blanco and Jordi Bellaire give us a tour of the darkest and darkest parts of the internet, w0rldtr33
Although the Internet existed earlier, it was not until the 90s that it began to spread throughout the world. The advent of the Internet has brought about an unprecedented revolution in mankind, to the point where we cannot imagine life without it. This technology has made it possible to directly connect the rest of the world, to democratize knowledge, entertainment or art on a scale never seen before in human history, creating new jobs and new ways of life. But unfortunately, everything was not so beautiful.
The rapid availability of knowledge has allowed media outlets to flourish freely producing fake news to deceive the so-called “fake news” public. Communication between people gave voice to those with the most dangerous ideas, whose messages could slowly trickle in and reach thousands of people. But the scariest part of the internet is the invisible dark web, a place where you’ll find real violence and humanity at its worst.
James Tynion IV, Fernando Blanco and Jordi Bellaire w0rldtr33, inspired by the latter to create a dark and terrifying thriller full of murder and plenty of gore. ECC Ediciones is the publisher that brings us this comic.
The darkest part of the web
The summary reads as follows: “In 1999, Gabriel and his friends discovered the secret Internet architecture of the Internet.” They have documented their observations in a forum called W0RLDTR33. And then lose control. Someone sneaked into W0RLDTR33, someone embraced the Undernet’s violent control over them with open arms. Paying a heavy price, Gabriel and the others thought they had sealed the net for good. You are wrong. And, now, the whole world knows the meaning of PH34R.
When Gabriel and his friends have to deal with w0rldtr33 and PH34R, Ellison Lan goes in search of his brother Gibson, who has just killed 60 of his neighbors on live TV. Through the network, he was able to paralyze his victims and then kill them. The two plots run in parallel, but they meet at some point.
The first issue acts as an introduction and gives the reader a lot of information. This is not a problem because the issue can grab the reader from the beginning. Mixing themes such as horror, slasher and thriller, Tynion creates a very compelling story that fits perfectly with today’s internet. Moreover, despite providing a lot of information, the end of this issue raises more questions than answers, which you want to continue. The characters and dialogues are well written, again showing Tynion’s quality as a screenwriter, especially in horror stories.
Blanco does a great job with his paintings, from the design to the environments, although the most noteworthy are the facial expressions, which convey the emotions of the characters perfectly. But part of the work’s great artistic appeal is due to the colorful Belair work. The work of these two artists leaves two very impressive images in this first edition. The influence of vegans to represent the effects of technology, such as bad communication on television, is amazing.
Edition of w0rldtr33 by ECC Ediciones
ECC Ediciones offers us the first edition of this comic in rustic format, cardboard cover, 48 color pages. As an extra, at the end of the comic there are pages detailing the creative process and inspiration that led the artists to create said comic.
ECC made a bit of a strange move with this comic, because at the same time as releasing this issue, they published another limited hardcover edition with a lentic cover. This latest edition brings together the first five issues of the series, so it’s rare to have two issues published at the same time, not only because of the number of the series, but also because of additional content such as introductions. Another aspect worth paying attention to is the price of the special edition, which is more affordable than the edition we are analyzing, the price is €9.00, so it can satisfy many readers.
w0rldtr33 is a joke that has a lot of potential to show the dark side of the internet. In a story that mixes thriller and horror, we are treated to a very exciting story full of mysteries and gruesome scenes that will keep readers interested in the mysteries and events that unfold. Not only to highlight the story but also the amazing painting and color of the work. If it weren’t for the asking price for this issue, we’re dealing with a comic that would be even more outrageous.
