The Crow reboot sparks controversy: more than 50,000 YouTube “dislikes” in one day

The tumultuous start to the remake of the cult classic has divided fans

This week saw the release of the first trailer for the new Crow directed by Rupert Sanders and under the Lionsgate label. Although the action-packed and incredibly gory sequences were enthusiastically received by some, overall audience response was less than favorable. A day after its appearance on YouTube, the t-shirt has accumulated more than 50,000 “dislikes”, indicating overall satisfaction.

Reimagining The Crow, especially after Alex Proyas’ iconic ’90s adaptation and Brandon Lee’s unforgettable performance, was a challenging mission. The first promotional images with Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven have already sparked controversy, fueling suspicion among even the most loyal fans.

The intention to maintain the dark, gothic tone of the original was overshadowed by the questionable choice of music and an atmosphere that many called “supernatural”. The negative response was immediate, reflected in a surprising amount of “dislikes” at the digital launch.

Director Alex Proyas, who has always been reluctant to do live-action remakes, emphasized the importance of Brandon Lee’s performance and the unique legacy of the original film. Proyas argues that the crow is more than history; It is a tribute to Lee’s talent and sacrifice, and therefore should be preserved intact.

The new crow

In this new episode, we follow Eric Draven (Skarsgård) and Shelley Webster (FKA Twigs), two soul mates whose lives are cut short by tragedy. Given a second chance, Eric seeks revenge on those who stole his future by moving between the worlds of the living and the dead.

Starring Danny Huston, Laura Bean, Sammy Bouajila and Jordan Bolger in a yet-to-be-announced cast and a script by Zach Bailin and Will Schneider, this version of The Crow promises to offer a new take on the tragic tale of love. And revenge. The film is scheduled to release on June 7, 2024.

While the Crow’s new vision has divided opinion, there’s no denying that the task of balancing nostalgia with innovation is no easy feat. Eric Draven’s story continues to resonate, and this new interpretation, while controversial, is a testament to his enduring influence on popular culture.

The Crow saga has left an indelible mark on pop culture, spawning numerous sequels and adaptations that have attempted to capture the essence of the tragic tale of love and revenge that defined the first film in 1994. Success and cultural influence followed. With the movie starring Brandon Lee, the franchise expanded, though none of the sequels could match the critical acclaim or public sentiment of the first film.

The Raven: City of Angels (1996) attempted to replicate the formula, however, it lacked the emotional and aesthetic impact of the original and received a mixed reception from both critics and audiences. The loss of the gothic atmosphere and the less engaging plot were key points in the reception.

Subsequently, The Crow: Salvation (2000) and The Crow: Wicked Prayer (2005) continued to expand the universe, but each time they moved away from the quality and depth that made the first film famous. These series introduced new characters and situations, but were criticized for originality and lack of emotional depth, and quickly fell into oblivion.

The Crow saga is an example of how a cultural phenomenon can dissolve in an attempt to recapture the magic of the original without giving it the same intensity and meaning. Yet the legacy of the 1994 film, cemented by Brandon Lee’s final, moving performance, remains unchanged, reminding us of the power of a well-told story and the lasting impact of a true performance.
