THE Sailor The manga and anime have been popular since the early 1990s. DIC conceded the granting of the original English dub in the series in 1995, and they produced the first two seasons before Cloverway took over for the following two seasons. Change in mid-term companies would lead to many continuity errors, including changes in attack names and various music scores.

Even among these general problems of continuity, DIC and Cloverway have always made many changes in the source equipment. Production companies have estimated that they had to make certain censorship concessions and moralize the additions to make it more “successful” for a Western audience. Although many consider these changes as regrettable or confusing today, some are quite funny.

Updated by Lauren Younkin on June 20, 2025: However Sailor has now been re-withdrawn in its entirety by Viz Media, the original English dub is still nostalgic for many of those who grew up with him at the time. These viewers may not even make content differences if they saw no other version. As such, this list has been updated to include other examples of modifications made in the English DUB in addition to complying with the current CBR formatting standards.

The last season was cut off from the English dub

Sailor Moon Sailor Stars was finally nicknamed in English thanks to Viz Media

Audience Sailor Who only looked at the English dub at the time of its release were probably disappointed with the end they received, because only four seasons of the original series were nicknamed in English by DIC and Cloverway. The fifth and last season, Sailor Moon Sailor Starswas completely cut off from the English version.

Each end of the sailor moon ending, explained

The manga Sailor Moon, the anime of the 90s and the Sailor Moon crystal all have slight differences in their ends, but all share a similar and timeless theme.

This was probably due to the content of the season, because it would have been almost impossible to censor the Sailor star as they did with the previous queer characters in the series. However, this meant that the Arc Dead Moon Circus began in the previous season, Sailor Moon SupersIt would remain unresolved since it ended at the start of season 5. Fortunately, the season would finally receive an English dub without any modification when Viz Media obtained the license for years later.

The identity of the fish’s eye of the fish has been censored

DIC and Cloverway jumped through hoops to erase queer inclusion

In the original version of the anime, Fish’s Eye is a member of The Dead Moon Circus who is expressed by wearing female clothes. Although it is not himself human, he often gives up his mission to try aspects of human culture such as beauty contests and disguise ballet. Fish’s Eye also indicated an attraction to men who were contrasting with his compatriots, even falling for Mamoru and declaring Usagi as his rival at some point.

Unfortunately, Cloverway followed the previous one defined by DIC to decide that any queer content was in Sailor Not suitable for their young demographic audience. Fish’s Eye was the victim of this censorship, his sex was modified by a woman and gave a woman actor of the voice in order to avoid any involvement of fluid gender identity. Unfortunately, it was not the first instance of queer censorship SailorBecause this model would be present throughout the series.

The bodies were erased to be too revealing

DIC has made visual changes to censor the body of women

Censorship of SailorThe English dub has taken many forms beyond narrative changes. Several of the changes they made to the series were also visual, whether by adding their own CGI effects or completely removing the elements of the original show. Such an example of this was to censor all the lines on the bodies of the characters who were deemed too risky or revealing.

This is the most important in the transformation sequences of Senshi, because there are executives where girls are represented as naked before putting their Senshi uniforms. All the lines that emphasized certain “sexual” areas on their bodies, such as their chest, were finally erased from the final product. This even includes scenes outside of transformation sequences where the characters are shown by doing normal activities such as taking a bath.

Japanese influence has been removed as much as possible

Visuals and dialogue have been modified in an effort to Americanize the series

Censored Japanese text of the English dub of Sailor Moon.

Despite Sailor Being an anime that takes place clearly in Japan, Western Studios has taken it very difficult to “Americanize” the series of their English -speaking audience. This meant that the currency in the dialogue was changed into “dollars”, the subjects were modified in school to give the impression that they were not learning English, and entire scenes representing certain aspects of the Japanese language and culture have been cut because they would have been too long to modify.

Although it is not easy for new viewers when things were completely cut off from the show, what is obvious, it is the moments when any sign of Japanese text was clearly erased from objects. Most will find that it is a silly and useless decision, but DIC was clearly very concerned that viewers perceive the framework of what it really was, that Tokyo.

The additional introduction has spoiled the revelations of the first season

DIC gives the history of the lunar kingdom in the first episode

The story of Sailor Follows the fallout from the destruction of the kingdom of the moon in the hands of Queen Beryl, but that did not immediately appear to the public. The Sailor Senshi first ignores their past life, and a large part of the first season is devoted to trying to understand the identity of the first princess. However, for those who watched the original English dub of the series, it would not have been a secret.

10th things that happen to Sailor Moon in the whole franchise

Sailor Moon shines as an emblematic magic anime series, but Usagi Tsukino unfortunately endures a lot of pain and trauma while saving the world.

For any reason, a short segment of overview is added after the intro of the very first Sailor Episode Dub English which explains the fall of the kingdom of the Moon. This was accomplished by taking images of episodes at the end of the season and cutting it together, which showed the Sailor Senshi previous with Princess Serenity and Prince Edymion, spoiling the revelation of their identities. Perhaps it was done because Dic was afraid that viewers do not understand the concept or because they had already cut the episode too much and had to resume execution time, but it was nevertheless a short view.

Luna’s voice made her an old woman

The direction of the English voice makes it its sound as a British grandmother

As the companion of Usagi, Luna acts like a mentor for her and the rest of the newly discovered Sailor Senshi while they enter their power and discover the links with their past life. The English dub made this concept of mentor further in its interpretation, representing it with a much older British voice, graceful of voice actress Jill Froppier.

Several fans who grew up with the English dub of Sailor I appreciated this change; However, this ultimately breaks the continuity of what fans previously knew about the character. Luna takes on the appearance of a young woman in human form, and the voice of an older woman who comes out of this body does not work in the same way as when she is in the form of a cat.

Zircony sex has been exchanged for unknown reasons

Make her a man in conflict with the history of Queen Nehelenia

A close -up of zirconia speaking in Sailor Moon.

Zircony is a villain introduced into Sailor Moon Supers as the leader of the dead moon circus. While not the most notable of The bad guys of Sailor MoonZircony has nevertheless become the target of a particular censorship brand for which the English dub was known: gender exchange. Zirconie is undoubtedly a female character in the original Japanese version, but Cloverway has decided to make her a man for the English public.

This change is perhaps the most confusing of gender exchanges that occurred in the English dub, because there is ostensibly no reason why this was necessary. The characters who have generally become victims of gender exchange in the anime of the 90s are generally presented as non -compliant to the genre; However, as an older woman, this should not have been a problem for zirconia. The change is made even more confusing since the anime strongly indicates that zirconia is the incarnation of the biggest fears of Nehelenia: aging and losing its beauty.

13

Incorherent transformation and attack names

Cloverway DIC change has led to new errors

Usagi turns into Sailor Moon and poses a signature of the anime of the 90s.

As THE anime magic girl, Sailor is, of course, characterized by the slogans that the characters cry during the attack or the transformation. This aspect of the series, like many others, was massacred when adapted by the English dub. A particularly notable change was the abolition of the end of the “makeup” of sensi transformation sentences, leaving the actors of the English voice to drag the word “power”.

It was the least of the problems with regard to slogans, because the names themselves would change on a whim and would lead to the confusion between the public. These differences arise mainly from the fact that two different studios have managed the DUB, with Cloverway apparently forgetting what had already been established by DIC. Something like “Moon Crystal Power, Make Up” ended up having three variations in English, from “Moon Crystal Power” to “Moon Star Power” to “Moon Prism Power”.

12

CGI effects and transitions have been added

These transitions were significantly out of the rest of the show

The Sailor Moon Dic English Dub adds a CGI transition to a scene with Queen Beryl.

Not only the English dub of Sailor It seems different from the original Japanese version, but it also seems different sometimes. This visual variance is because, for any reason, DIC decided to incorporate their own effects and transitions using CGI. These additions appear to be particularly shocking due to their appearance outside space, which gives the show a somewhat PowerPoint quality.

Some speculate that the studio added these visuals to cover the places they have made. With the aversion of the studio to everything they deemed too violent or too sexual, there have been many cases where censorship was not sufficient, and the studio removed whole scenes accordingly. However, these transitions do not quite work as a way to go from scene to stage on cut equipment; If anything, they no longer draw attention to the interference of the studio.

11

The addition of Western slang

The dialogue is full of jargon of the 90s obsolete

Sailor Moon Episode 35: "Memories of return Usagi and Mamoru," Mercury tells Malachite to whiten its roots.

The location of Sailor Moon was strongly and negatively affected following the abolition of references to Japanese culture and language to further Americanize the series. These dialectical changes meant the frequent inclusion of Western slang in the dialogue that was popular at the time. Examples of this were from the use of words such as “Phat”, “Fly” and “Hunkasaurus” to lines like the iconic “Go Bleach of your roots, Flee!” to Malachite / Kunzite.

10 things from anime Sailor Moon who only make sense of manga readers

The adaptation of the anime of the 90s of Sailor Moon remains emblematic, but there are parts of the story that make sense to those who have read the manga.

The public has received the addition of such terms of slang with mixed reactions, some appreciating nature worthy of cringing teeth that it has brought to the series and others feeling entirely repulsed. If it is clear that the language used was “modern” at the time, the slang of the 90s became obsolete in a way that makes it entirely foreign to the public today. If it adds to the charm of the original Sailor The anime belongs to the individual spectator, but the change was nevertheless divisor.
