Spiderman has one of the greatest rogues galleries in comic book history. The web-slinging superhero has the honor of battling against Marvel Comics’ most iconic villains, including alien symbiotes, evil genies, and countless animal-themed villains. However, few villains are as iconic as Doctor Octopus – and he would be the first to admit it.
Once a respected scientist, Dr. Otto Octavius transformed into one of Spider-Man’s most recognizable foes. While he may not be in the same weight class as Venom or the Green Goblin, Doc Ock is no slouch. Through his appearances in comics, television, and movies, the supervillain has proven himself to be a worthy contender against the mighty Spider-Man.
Doctor Octopus assembled the first iteration of the Sinister Six
Doctor Octopus may have the biggest ego of anyone in Spider-Man’s rogues gallery, but even he understands when he needs help defeating the web-slinging superhero. In The Amazing Spider-Man Annual #1, Doc Ock assembled the very first set of Spider-Man villains: the Sinister Six. Alongside Kraven the Hunter, Sandman, Electro, Mysterio and Vulture, Doctor Octopus attempted to assassinate Spider-Man which almost succeeded.
The Sinister Six have gone through many iterations and formations since their debut, but Doctor Octopus is almost always one of the core members. By forming the team all those decades ago, he proved that he had the leadership skills and intelligence to hold his own, even against a hero as powerful as Spider-Man. The Sinister Six remain Marvel Comics’ most iconic supervillain team, and that’s largely thanks to the machinations of Otto Octavius.
Doctor Octopus was the first villain to defeat Spider-Man
Doctor Octopus made his now historic debut in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #3, which features his first battle with the titular wall-crawler. At this point, Spider-Man is still relatively new to the superhero game and his skills have yet to be tested. Doctor Octopus takes advantage of Spider-Man’s youth and inexperience, becoming the first person to substantially defeat the hero.
Although Spider-Man ultimately has the last laugh, Doctor Octopus makes one of the most impressive debuts of any early comic book villain. His early victory supports his massive ego, fooling him into believing that he will beat Spider-Man once again with each of his successive plans. Even though Doctor Octopus has lost more times than won in his battles with Spider-Man, he will always be the first man to defeat the hero.
Doctor Octopus was the first supervillain to unmask Spider-Man
Nothing is more valuable to a superhero than their secret identity. Any supervillain who manages to unmask a hero automatically enters the history books. After just a few encounters with Spider-Man, Doctor Octopus does the unthinkable in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man #12 when he removes the hero mask in front of many of his friends and family.
Luckily for Spider-Man, his secret identity didn’t disappear with his unmasking. Because he had been temporarily weakened earlier in the story, Doctor Octopus immediately concluded that Peter Parker was nothing more than a decoy to hide Spider-Man’s true identity. Despite this, Octavius was the very first person to remove Spider-Man’s mask in battle, although he did not learn his identity.
Doctor Octopus briefly transforms Spider-Man into his sidekick
The early comics feature some of Doctor Octopus’ most daring victories over Spider-Man. In The Amazing Spider-Man #55, Doc Ock uses a new weapon, the Nullifer, against Spider-Man. When hit by the Nullifier, Spider-Man emerges with a severe case of amnesia. Seizing the opportunity, Octave makes the hero believe that he is working for him. Over the next few issues, Spider-Man acts as Doctor Octopus’ henchman, enforcing his crime spree across the city before finally regaining his memories.
Any villain who manages to put down Spider-Man’s heroism belongs in the Marvel Comics Hall of Fame. Doctor Octopus was able to briefly make Spider-Man forget which side he was on, using his enemy’s own powers for evil. Although things eventually took a dour turn for the villain, he briefly had one of the most powerful henchmen of all time.
Doctor Octopus harnessed the power of the sun in the palm of his hand
Doctor Octopus had his first live-action iteration in Sam Raimi Spider-Man 2with Alfred Molina adding an extra layer of tragedy to the villainous character. During the events of the film, the brilliant Dr. Otto Octavius generates an entirely new source of energy, which he likens to holding “the power of the sun” in the palm of his hand. This work of genius eventually backfires, leading to his villainous turn as Doctor Octopus.
Even though the experiment has gone wrong, it still captures Doctor Octopus’ most powerful weapon: his brain. Of all the Spider-Man villains, Doctor Octopus is among the most intelligent. He uses this intelligence for evil, focusing on obscene creations that threaten the very fate of the world. This is evident in Spider-Man 2as the evil scientist ends up taking his experiment to a much larger scale that almost destroys the city.
Doctor Octopus was cast in the original Secret Wars
The original 1984 Secret Wars The event saw the most powerful superheroes and supervillains kidnapped by the omnipresent Beyonder to fight to the death on Battleworld. Only the strongest of these groups was selected, and Doctor Octopus was one of them. In the early issues of the story, Octavius appears as a leading force on the villain team, even leading an assault on the X-Men that would have succeeded without Magneto’s timely intervention.
Just being chosen to participate in the Secret Wars proves how powerful Doctor Octopus is. Additionally, his actions on Battleworld only solidify his legacy as one of the most powerful villains in the Marvel Universe. Not only did he manage to rally a group of pesky villains, but he also almost took out the X-Men.
Otto Octavius sends an army of Octopus robots to attack New York City
In the historic 600th issue of The Amazing Spider-Manthe ailing Doctor Octopus makes one of his last attempts to subdue New York. The mad scientist fashions an army of Octopus robots that lay siege to the city, hijacking everything within their reach and putting the lives of every citizen in danger. This event forces the Avengers and Spider-Man to team up to stop the invasion.
Any street bad guy worth the Avengers’ attention is impressive, and Doctor Octopus’ large robot army was more than enough to worry Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. Octavius is only defeated when Spider-Man obtains the helmet that controls the Octopus robots, overpowering the villain with his own intelligence. Even this was not a complete defeat, as it is later revealed that Octavius used the helmet to scan Spider-Man’s brain, the first step in his plan to hijack the web-slinger’s body.
Captain Stacy is killed during a battle between Spider-Man and Doc Ock
The Green Goblin gets most of the credit for killing people close to Spider-Man, but Doctor Octopus gets in on the action during the events of The Amazing Spider-Man #90. In this issue, Octavius fights Spider-Man on the rooftops of Manhattan, causing large chunks of rubble to fall down to street level. During the scuffle, Captain George Stacy saves a spectator from falling debris, only to be caught under its weight himself. Captain Stacy dies from her injuries in Spider-Man’s arms moments later.
George Stacy was one of the first major victims of The Amazing Spider-Mandying even before his daughter, Gwen. This places Doctor Octopus among an elite group of supervillains who have taken something irreplaceable from Spider-Man. Captain Stacy’s death haunted Peter Parker for a long time, only to become worse when the Green Goblin killed Gwen shortly after.
Doctor Octopus has taken the whole world hostage
One of Doctor Octopus’ most grandiose plans comes to fruition during the “Ends of the Earth” storyline, which celebrates the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man’s first appearance in 1962. During this event, the dying Otto Octavius activates a series of satellites known as the Octave Lens, which has the power to accelerate the greenhouse effect and raise the Earth’s temperature to the point where it can no longer support life. Octavius then reveals that he has also developed technology to save the world and end global warming. The villain then holds the entire planet hostage while he demands the saving of the world in exchange.
This is by far the largest of Doctor Octopus’ many projects. His Octavian goal earns the attention of the entire Avengers team and pushes Spider-Man to his breaking point as he does everything in his power to stop the villain. Even though he is defeated at the end of this story, Octavius still has a few tricks up his sleeve. Shortly after, he begins the final phase of his plan to defeat Spider-Man by becoming Spider-Man.
Doctor Octopus hijacked Spider-Man’s mind to become the Superior Spider-Man
Doctor Octopus is responsible for the greatest feat ever accomplished by a Spider-Man villain in the comics. During Dan Slott’s Spider-Man saga, it is revealed that Otto Octavius is slowly dying, forcing him to take drastic action to save his own life. Weaving together a plan from his previous attempts at world domination, Octavius manages to implant his consciousness into Peter Parker’s body, hijacking his nemesis and stealing his life. He then appears as the Superior Spider-Man, fully taking Spider-Man’s place for several months.
No supervillain has ever defeated Spider-Man as soundly as Doctor Octopus did in the “Dying Wish” Spider-Man storyline.
