The Dune universe is experiencing a massive resurgence since the success of Denis Villeneuve’s double-parter Dune adaptation. Since then, countless rumors have swirled about the future of the Dune films, spinoff TV series, and even video games. The Dune hype train will soon continue moving forward when the first spinoff TV series hits MAX later this year, Dune: Prophecy. Based on a prequel/spin-off novel that explores the Bene Gesserit Order in more depth, Dune: Prophecy is just the beginning.
Frank Herbert’s son, Brian Herbert, wrote a ton of Dune novels that continued the story, filled in gaps, or expanded on the story. His novel Brotherhood of Dune is a large piece of fabric on which Dune: Prophecy is based. However, there are a number of excellent Dune spin-offs and prequels in literature that may also inspire more new Dune TV shows like Dune: Prophecy. While some are a little more esoteric than others, they’re all worth considering for the future of Dune storytelling.
10 Paul of Dune is the direct sequel to Dune
Some audiences may not realize that when Denis Villeneuve continues his Dune films in a few years with Dune: Messiahhe won’t pick up where things left off. From the book Dune: Messiah takes place twelve years after the events of the first book, it can be assumed that the film adaptation will do the same. That being said, there is a novel that picks up the story much closer to the end of the first book.

Although it is perhaps a little less likely that a spin-off like Paul of Dune This will happen, given that it would involve most of the original cast and require consistency in the director’s voice, there may still be a chance that some of these events will play out on screen. A TV series would be great, but it’s also possible that Denis Villeneuve could adapt elements of Brian Herbert’s novel and use them for his Dune: Messiah following. After all, it’s not like Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya are going to rapidly age twelve years in two. Perhaps its adaptation lies more directly after Dune: part two than people think.
9 House Atreides could be seen in the years before Dune
Another interesting period in Dune history that could be adapted into a spin-off would be an exploration of House Atreides several years before the events of Dune. The inner workings of the Imperium are an interesting part of Dune’s story that was less explored in Denis Villeneuve’s first two films. Seeing how things work and what conflicts arise in great noble families could be as interesting as any other series about power and family dynamics.

Paulus Atreides |
Helena Wealth |
Kean Atreides |
Leto Atreides I |
While Brian Herbert’s novel Dune: House Atreides focuses on Duke Leto Atreides and his rule over Caladan, there could be even more potential for a series about the elderly Duke Paulus. With a long history of the noble house, any series revolving around other eras of Atreides’ reign would be excellent material for a spinoff series. Focusing on Paulus Atreides or even his father Kean Atriedes would be a great idea for a TV storyline.
8 House Harkonnen would give Dune fans an anti-hero series
Without a doubt, the most evil family in the Imperium, House Harkonnen, has proven time and time again that they will do whatever it takes to gain and maintain power. A TV series centered around a young Vladimir Harkonnen might be one of the most intriguing ideas yet. For fans who enjoy anti-hero stories, this would be an opportunity to explore another side of the villainous Baron during his formative years with perhaps more moral sense than his older sibling.

Vladimir Harkonnen |
Dmitri Harkonnen |
Shaddam Corrino IV |
Abulurd Harkonnen |
Watching the rise and fall of a villainous character will always grab the audience’s attention. Brian Herbert’s novel Dune: House Harkonnen explores a plan by Vladimir Harkonnen to attempt to seize power from Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV. However, there is a chance for a new series to go back a little further and see Vladimir in his early days, struggling with his destiny and ultimately turning to heinous acts to achieve his goals.
7 The Bene Tleilax is the other order behind the scenes
Fans are familiar with the shadowy Bene Gesserit Order behind the scenes of most projects across the Imperium. The Bene Gesserit is set to be explored even further with upcoming spinoff series Dune: Prophecy. SO, it makes perfect sense to adapt a spinoff series centered on the galaxy’s other powerful shadow organization: the Bene Tleilax..

Scytale the face dancer |
Bijaz the dwarf |
Thallo |
The Duncan Idaho Ghola |
The Bene Tleilax play a much larger role in the books that follow. Dune and especially in Dune: Messiah. If they are likely to appear in the sequel to Denis Villeneuve’s film, they also belong to a series that is entirely their own. Any time period leading up to Muad’dib’s Jihad is suitable for any spin-off focused on the great powers of the Imperium. Using genetic engineering and other practices to develop the ultimate specimen that will save the universe, the Bene Tleilax can go even further than the Bene Gesserit when it comes to achieving their goals. A spinoff series about them would be entertaining, to say the least.
6 The origins of House Corrino are said to depict the greatest reign
Before the rule of House Atreides, the most powerful noble house in the Imperium was House Corrino, and it was so for ten thousand years. The largest house in Dune history has plenty of historical moments to mine for a spinoff series. While there haven’t been many timelines explored outside of Paul’s Generation or Leto II, there’s plenty for writers and filmmakers looking to put their own spin on Dune.

Shaddam Corrino IV |
Princess Irulan Corrino |
Elrood Corrino IX |
Miscellaneous Sardaukar |
Brian Herbert’s book Dune: Corrino House explores the ruling noble house in the years just before Paul’s story. The Corrino family is perhaps the best perspective to take for any Dune series revolving around the broader politics of the Imperium. Seeing Shaddam IV’s reign up close could be an interesting storyline for a spin-off and give more depth to his hatred for the Atreides. However, there are also plenty of opportunities to tell a completely original story in a completely different era regarding the Big House.
5 Navigators of Dune explores another crucial part of the Imperium
The best thing Brian Herbert’s novel did was explore the different powers of the universe, delving deeper into what makes the Imperium tick. Likewise for Brotherhood of Dune, Dune Navigators is a look at the Space Guild and those who control in-universe travel and banking. Without the Guild Navigators, citizens would have no way to utilize interstellar travel.

Heralds of change |
Each of the books focusing on different parts of the Imperium takes place thousands of years before the events of Dunelooking at the early years of these different sects of the universe. A spin-off series set well before the first film is already in the works but focuses on the Bene Gesserit, so a series about the inner workings of the Spacing Guild would certainly add an entirely different element to the Dune cinematic universeregardless of the time period in which the story would exist.
4 Mentats of Dune adds depth to another important element of Dune’s story
Another essential title and position in almost every noble house is the Mentat. The most famous Mentats in Dune lore are figures such as Thufir Hawat, Piter de Vries, and later Duncan Idaho Ghola. Another form of humanity created after the events of the “Butler Jihad”, Mentats are trained from a young age to process information and data at rapid speeds in order to aid specific causes and leaders.

Mentats were created to avoid reliance on computers and thinking machines in the days following the Butlerian Jihad. They become essential beings in times of war or crisis for the leaders of noble houses. Spend time with young Mentats in training or discover the origins of the Mentats as described in the novel Dune Mentats are great ideas for a TV spin-off or movie prequel.
3 Swordmasters of Dune would be the most entertaining origin story
A Swordmasters spin-off would not only be great in the form of a prequel where the first Swordmasters are established and trained, as well as the establishment of the Ginaz School, but also in the form of spending time with famous Swordmasters such as Duncan Idaho. Brian Herbert never got the chance to direct the novel, but it could be argued that the most entertaining spin-off is the one centered on a young student at the Ginaz school or showing the origins of skilled fighters in the years following the Butlerian Jihad.

Rivvy Dinari |

The best options for a Swordmasters spinoff series are either a Duncan Idaho origin story or a story about a new character training at the Ginaz School in the same year the school was destroyed by House Moritani . Whatever direction the creators wish to take, the Imperium’s loyal soldiers, assigned to various dukes, barons, and earls, have plenty of fodder for a spinoff series.
2 The War of the Assassins was a great conflict before Paul took power
While Brian Herbert Paul of Dune And The Winds of Dune show the events that took place immediately after Dune And Dune: Messiah, they also look back at great moments that happened before the first book. Since the later parts of these books seem less likely to be turned into spin-offs, the prequel parts have a lot more going for them for several reasons.

Leto Atreides I |
Lady Jessica |
Duncan Idaho |
Gurney Halleck |
An “Assassin’s War” is considered a legal and formal conflict between two or more great noble houses where attempts to kill great leaders are permitted as long as such conflicts do not escalate into larger scale wars. House Atreides found itself in the middle of conflict a few years before the events of Dune. The war pitted House Atreides against House Moritani, which ultimately ended with the victory of the Atreides. What this spin-off would allow for is a true story centered around Leto Atreides I, in which Leto is the protagonist ruling his house and waging his own war. Paul Atreides was young enough to be recast, and all creators would need a commitment from Oscar Issac, Rebecca Ferguson, Josh Brolin and Jason Momoa. This would be one of the best Dune spin-offs audiences could get.
1 The Butlerian Jihad shook the universe
The Butlerian Jihad was an event that occurred much closer to our present than the events of Dunein which robots and thinking machines gained incredible power over the universe and thus sparked a revolt of humanity. About ten thousand years ago Dune, humans relied heavily on conscious machines, but decided that this reliance was dangerous. A war between man and machine would set the stage for all that follows.

Given its effect on the Imperium, the Butlerian Jihad is a huge, substance-heavy crisis that would make for an excellent multi-season spinoff.. With noble houses such as the Atreides and the Harkonnens in their early days at the center of the crisis, it would make perfect sense to see the story play out on screen. Paving the way for the human beliefs and philosophies that gave rise to organizations and beings such as the Bene Gesserit, the Bene Tleilax, and the Mentats, The Butlerian Jihad is by far the best possible spin-off that audiences need to see. see later. Dune: Prophecy.
