10 Anime Heroes Who Should Have Died (But Didn’t)

The following contains spoilers for various manga/anime series.

When writing an animated action/adventure series, it’s not always easy to decide who should live or die, or how. The story can’t continue if all the key heroes are killed, and viewers don’t want to see that either, so the heroes are given all kinds of armor to survive their fights and other dangers. The trick is to make their survival believable and not make it clear that the creators are saving them.

Sometimes the story is handled in a clumsy manner, and an anime hero will cheat death when it’s obvious he should have succumbed. In some cases, the story will come up with a contrived or last-minute reason why the character was spared, which might not please viewers, and in extreme cases, a hero might survive with only a vague explanation of how which he avoided his impending. disappearance.

10 Nezuko Kamado has evolved to resist the sun’s rays

Tanjiro was ready to see her die

Nezuko tells Tanjiro that she is fine in Demon Slayer.

It’s quite common for shonen action heroes to defy the odds and survive deadly attacks in combat, but Demon Slayer went even further by allowing Nezuko Kamado to survive a fatal vulnerability. During the battle against Hantengu, Tanjiro left Nezuko behind to finish off his enemy, knowing that he was dooming Nezuko to die as the morning sun rose.

Against all odds, Nezuko survived and she even looked more human than ever, suggesting that Nezuko was somehow regaining her humanity after all this time. The anime still hasn’t explained how this unprecedented event was possible, but it still caught the attention of Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King. By surviving the sun, Nezuko became Muzan’s first real hope for overcoming his much-despised weakness to the sun.

The poster for Demon Slayer depicts Tanjiro Kamado, Nezuko Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsumu, and Inosuke Hashibira leaping forward.

9 Pell had no way to escape the bomb blast

He magically reappeared later

Pell attacks in his Zoan hybrid form in one piece

It is well known that the characters of One piece almost never die, and even bad guys benefit time and time again from this generous plot armor. However, even by these merciful standards, it made no sense for Alabasta’s soldier Pell to survive his selfless sacrifice in the Battle of Alubarna, the capital. No one could stop Crocodile’s bomb from exploding, so Pell transformed into a bird and flew high into the air with him.

The bomb exploded with terrible force, obviously vaporizing Pell with it, and Princess Vivi was both relieved and horrified by what she saw. Pell later did the impossible and returned alive and well, which hurt the immersion and cheapened his sacrifice. He was a minor character anyway, so there was no reason, and no way, for Pell to come back for more.

Meanwhile, Jugram Haschwalth commented that Byakuya was dead, with Yhwach briefly acknowledging him.

However, Byakuya survived after all, which didn’t make much sense, considering how determined the Sternritter were to kill every Soul Reaper they encountered, and Äs Nödt was the last person to become the exception in showing mercy. Byakuya’s ultra-tight survival was plot armor at work, with Bleach reluctant to kill off such a popular character.

The Fairy Tail guild has magical plot armor

Juvia Lockser becomes arrogant in the Fairy Tail anime.

As One pieceShonen action anime fairy tail is very reluctant to write any of his characters, even the antagonists, with a few exceptions. This led to some contrived survival moments, including Juvia Lockser somehow cheating death when she was forced to fight Gray Fullbuster to the death thanks to Invel Yuria’s icy powers.

Juvia was willing to give her life to protect Gray, and that’s exactly what she did, prompting Gray to fight and defeat Invel with vengeful anger. Shortly after, Juvia was revealed to be alive, which lessened the impact of her noble sacrifice and showed once again that the power of friendship and artifice was still strong in the world. fairy tail. On the plus side, this meant that Juvia could return in the anime sequel and fight alongside Gray again, like with their devastating new Unison Raid.

6 Stark should have died when the red dragon approached him

Monsters like this don’t show mercy

Stark faces a red dragon in episode 5

For the most part, plot devices and armor are limited in the Freezing: beyond the end of the journey anime, since the story is really about personal growth and not about the heroes’ ability to defeat their enemies. One exception is Stark’s miraculous survival from a fearsome red dragon a few years ago, which was presented as a semi-comedic moment.

Some shonen heroes shine in small doses, while others overstay their welcome, annoying fans over time.

Red dragons are generally vicious, ravenous beings of fire and anger in fantasy, and that of Friends was no different as he tore a city apart. Then Stark looked at this scaly beast, too scared to move, so the dragon decided that Stark was a powerful being of immense courage and left. It was fun, but obviously Stark should have been swallowed up as soon as the dragon spotted him.

5 Nobara Kugisaki survived fatal injuries just in time

His survival was not fully shown in the manga

Nobara Kugisaki looking over her shoulder in the anime Jujutsu Kaisen

It was a shocking moment Jujutsu Kaisen when Mahito the villain attacked Nobara Kugisaki with his inactive shapeshifting, quickly knocking Nobara onto her back and demolishing part of her head. She lay there, visibly dead, and Yuji Itadori was certain that his friend had just died. As of now, in the anime, Nobara’s fate is uncertain and the odds don’t look good.

Manga readers, on the other hand, know that Nobara actually survived, but given the severity of that injury, it’s surprising that she didn’t just die the moment Mahito hit her. Nobara has Aratta Nita to thank for his survival, although Nobara’s recovery was not fully depicted, which seemed unsatisfying to many fans.

4 Jinwoo Sung got another lifetime lease without expecting it

He took advantage of the opportunity

Solo Leveling's Jinwoo Sung studies a status log screen of his internal 'System'

Jinwoo Sung was presented as an outsider in Solo Upgradean E-rank hunter who even had trouble killing goblins and other low-level monsters alone. Then he and his group faced their fate in a double dungeon, a traumatic event that clearly cost Jinwoo his life – except it didn’t. This served as the anime’s first major plot twist, with Jinwoo surviving and gaining the ability to level up.

This impossible survival was the whole point of Solo Upgrade anime, so it doesn’t bother fans, but it still seems convenient for a hunter who should have died a long time ago. Of all people, it was Jinwoo who was saved by mysterious forces to give him a second chance, and Jinwoo won’t waste it. He has already gained many levels and even become bigger and more mature, which is how he will survive these dungeons and look great in the process.

Bakugo is seemingly dead, but these pro heroes used their thread-based Quirks to seal the wounds and form Bakugo’s new heart, an unexpected use of a Quirk like Foldabody. As Edgeshot hoped, his improvised medical treatment worked, but it still seemed contrived and strange that this strategy could save Bakugo. 2 Kazuma Sato managed to get out of Megumin’s biggest explosion

It was humorous plot armor with stats to back it up

Kazuma Sato from Konosuba looks like an adventurer

For the sake of satirical comedy, the unfortunate heroes of Konosuba Always survive close encounters with monsters and magic, escaping certain death with silly last-minute attacks or asking suitable heroes to bail them out. The most extreme example happened in the Legend of the Purple movie, when Megumin and Yunyun prepared the biggest combo explosion of all time.

Kazuma was caught in the middle of this apocalyptic explosion, so he relied on his only tool: his immense luck stat. With Aqua blessing him as hard as she could, Kazuma pushed his luck to the max, defying the impossible odds and managing to escape the explosion. It was a classic Konosuba comedic moment, with the heroes doing utter stupid things because that’s what they do.

Sasuke Uchiha looks worried

Later in the Naruto anime, Sasuke Uchiha didn’t need plot armor to protect him, since his own skills with jtusu like the Chidori and the Mangekyo Sharingan were all he needed. At first, however, Sasuke had little chance against jonin-level ninjas like Haku, and Sasuke apparently died to protect Naruto from Haku’s deadly needle attack.

An expert ninja like Haku could and should have delivered the final blow this way, but for plot reasons, Sasuke escaped alive, as did Naruto.
